Posey Tub is a Bay Area original. A popular scene from the movie The Matrix was filmed in the tunnel. There's a bike path on the side, but it's very narrow and dirty. If you looking for some Alameda/Oakland history, drive through tunnel.

hit it before 7:15am on a weekday or prepare to wait in traffic. We need additional ways off the island - -possibly a "Del Coronado" style bridge with 4 lanes that runs from the old naval air base to just west of Jack London Square.

I have bee using the Posey Tube for about 15 years, usually for driving, but also for walking. For my weekend walks, I generally start from my home bear High Street and walk in the northwesterly direction, until I reach Posey Tube, then I continue on through, and find myself in the sunshine again in the vicinity of Oakland's Chinatown. Then I continue walking until I get to the U.C. Berkeley campus, make a U-turn, and retrace my steps (again walking through Posey Tube) and return home. Usually, I need to halt walking and squeeze against the wall of the Posey Tube to allow a passing bicyclist go by. The walkway is not really safe for people on bicycles, in my opinion. All it would take is one careless movement, resulting in the bicycle getting caught in the iron rail, and resulting in the bicyclist getting thrown into the path of a speeding car. If I had a bicycle, I would only walk it through the tunnel. Anyway, I guess one cannot expect the walkway in the tunnel to be as clean, safe, and wide as, for example, the walkways inside the terminal in the Oakland airport. I think it would be nice if the City of Oakland, and City of Alameda, would hire somebody to clean the filthy walls of the tunnel. Perhaps, there should be a sight reading, "Walk Your Bicycle!"The lanes in the tunnel are narrow. Once, I saw a crash between two automobiles traveling in the easterly direction. One of the cars jumped about a foot in the air, and the car tilted, and the car came back down, right-side up. The other car was not harmed much, and the other driver continued to drive through, and on to the city streets. The immediate result was a backup in traffic on the Alameda side. This accident occurred late one afternoon, in July 2014.The facades over the eastern portal and over the western portals are nice. Perhaps they are in an Art Deco style. The fact that the facades are tall helps travelers to find the entrances to the tunnel. The following is likely the most important issue about the tunnel. The most important issue is that there is not ANOTHER tunnel. I am under the impression that a major block to business development in Alameda is poor access to the island. The lack of business development is evident from the high vacancy rate in the large industrial park located near the Wind River company. Of course, everybody is aware of the lack of business development on the former naval base. I realize that The Posey Tube is just an inanimate object, but it us the case that I am now blaming the shortcomings of The Posey Tube for the slow business development on Alameda Island.

This is a tube that connects Oakland to Alameda! It was old and dirty but got clean recently! What a difference!Seems like a new tunnel with brighter lighting too!Now you can see where you are driving instead of into the fog...

Over a bridge or through the tunnel there's only two ways to get into Alameda. So this time we took the tunnel in. The concept is definitely cool that you're under ground and under the water. But other than that we didn't see anything really to write home about.

The Posey Tube is an immersed underwater tunnel connecting Oakland to the City of Alameda under the Oakland Estuary. It was first used in 1928 with the opening date of October 27.Its a fun tube/tunnel to drive. The tube was named after Alameda County Supervisor George Posey.
