This highway takes you from Oakhurst to the Jamestown area. A must trip for motorcycle riders. From Oakhurst to Boot Jack and on to Mariposa is an easy 27 mile drive. While you're in Mariposa and it's around lunch time, stop into the Golden Coin. One of the historic buildings in Mariposa, about three years ago it was turned into a restaurant. Great food. From Mariposa 49 winds it's way through Bear Valley and on to the historic mining town of Coulterville. Grab a bite to eat at the Coulterville Café.From there it's an easy ride or drive for about ten miles. Then the switchbacks start. Like I said it's a great ride for a motorcycle. On to Jamestown where you'll find the Wood's Creek Café. And right across the street is Jamestown Harley Davidson.Have fun and ride safe.

From Oakhurst to Mariposa is a very pleasant drive on highway 49. Mariposa is a small town with several gift shops and 2 gas stations. Very friendly people. The road has rolling hills with many oak trees. An easier way to go to Yosemite, change to highway 140 toward El Portal, than through Oakhurst which can be too winding for some.

The Visitor's Center is run by very knowledgeable local people who are dedicated to helping the public by giving them what they need to know. You can find maps, hotel info, best places to eat, road and weather conditions, campsites. I doubt there's a question you could ask that they wouldn't know the answers to, or find out. They're great bunch of people who perform an amazing service for the community. Stop in and say "Hi!"

Highway 49 begins on the southern end at Oakhurst, California. It goes north thru the Mother Lode gold-mining country and passes thru many historic towns including Mariposa, Coulterville, Jamestown, Sonora, Angels Camp, Jackson, Placerville, Grass Valley, etc. There is a lot of history on this road. If you travel it don't take it if you want to get somewhere fast as in many places it is quite windy and slow. Take it if you have the time to enjoy it. It's worth it

No guard rails (or very few) and lots of twists and bends so if you get car sick don't go. But I love this route. The scenery is worth it and I just take my time and drink it all in. From Mariposa to Oakhurst, it's all good. Don't forget to pull over from time to time to let the locals go by.

Take the time to travel this route, it will recharge you mind. Vistas are where you can take pictures, and see the real life history of the gold rush days.

We traveled this road a few times during our visit to Yosemite National Park and to historic Mariposa. (Be sure to visit the museum in town!) Each time was a pleasure!

A Freeway looks likes a Freeway no matter where it is. On our way to South Lake Tahoe from Oakhurst, Ca, we were looking for a scenic drive and trying to avoid another Freeway . CA49 was highlighted as a scenic drive and we found it to be one of the more awesome drives we have made. If you are interested in a somewhat challenging drive with awe inspiring views of Northern California try Highway 49 to Highway 50 from Oakhurst, CA.

Molto suggestiva la strada che permette di entrare ed addentrarsi nel parco. I vista points permettono di fare delle ottime foto, e poi, quando si è dentro, si inizia a meravigliarsi.
