Ya might think a lake is a lake and it has water, what's not to like? Well, this lake is pretty far drained down at this point, although it may fill up in the spring somewhat, but the lake itself is not what makes this whole area a bad place for a vacation. There are not as many access point as there should be to make the water easy to get to. Forget a peaceful time with all the motorized toys buzzing about and the drunk people you will run into. What is it about a lake that makes these people need to get drunk, make a lot of noise and find joy in bothering people who are not doing the same? Forget hoping the police or CHP will instill any sense or order around here. They are too busy generating revenue by stopping every car the can to write any citation they can for, from speeding 2 mph over the limit to trapping cars with pedestrians jumping into the crosswalk and stopping vehicles for not yielding. Small town moneymaker in Chester! Watch Out! If you want a real lake with real mountains, just travel over to Lake Tahoe! Dump this backwater cesspool and all the hillbillies locals, that don't want you here anyway!

what a great job the people did for the 4th of July fireworks. Our family went up and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. For a small community the fireworks made you think you were in a large city. People were friendly and polite and respectful where we parked next to the lake. Just a lovely end to a beautiful day.

A lovely place with thousands of birds in and around the water. It was clear they the drought in California also hit this place as the water level was low when we where here.

The town of Chester seems to bill this recreation area as some sort of tourist hotspot, but I can't understand why. We went for a hike around 5:00 and were startled to see a bunch of guys with guns. Turns out they were dove hunting, but they were cognizant of hikers. Greeeat. We started the hike with feelings of misgivings (which we should have heeded). We saw more dove hunters on the other side of the lake. Greeeat. The lake was not to be found until we had gone a while. So I wasn't sure if that state was seasonal or permanent. Then the bugs came! We ran all the way back to our car, the whole time hoping the hunters were still aware of hikers.

No Tahoe/Truckee crowds or prices! Gorgeous and still as peaceful as it was 50 years ago on Chester's shores. Fishing, biking, hiking, bird watching (bald eagles), kind folks. Water sports, and vacation rentals, too.

Lake Almanor is a large lake located in Northern California. It is located very close to Lassen Volcanic Park. The area is very beautiful with many opertunities for camping, fishing, swimming, whatever you would like to do. You do not have to deal with the high costs and crowds of Lake Tahoe. If you are visting the US, you may want to take the time to get away from the crowds and head to a overlooked jewel in Northern California.

I have loved Lassen, "the one and lonely Park," for decades. We camped at a very convenient RV, cabin and tent resort, just up the road from the Bidwell House, going out of town. Clean, convenient, with hot showers and a short walk for a dip in the Lake. They also have a launch ramp and boat slips. Their store is well organized and well stocked with all the essentials. We spent one day in the Warner Valley, driving up to Drakesbad. From the entrance to the Warner Valley, we drove up a nearby dirt road to Willow Lake. The lake hosts a number of endangered species of bog plants including carnivorous varieties. Speaking of carnivorous, if you plan to picnic, bring bug spray. You can walk in to the lake with your canoe or other watercraft. There are several campsites, mostly used by fishermen. In the afternoon, we visited the former logging town of Westwood. They have a very interesting small museum.On our second day we explored the old mining ghost town of Seneca and drove along Butt Lake. I have canoed there in the past. The lake is much larger than I remembered. Both Almanor and Butt Lake are dam controlled.

A very good temperature for swimming. Rocky beach so bring water shoes. Great for exploring. Lots of different species of birds including my favorite-pelicans.

I stumbled upon this pretty lake. We had left Lake Tahoe early that morning and drove north on scenic CA89. I was tired and needed to rest for a bit, and found a day use area/ camp ground of the Lassen Nation Forest on the southwestern side of the lake. We had lunch and walked a bit along the lake, listening to kids scream and a dog bark. Anglers were fishing from non-motorized boats on the lake. I opted to take my dog on a short walk along the lake shore, away from the loud crowd. I saw a bald eagle take off and watched it disappear into the blue sky. Then I stumbled upon the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail, a paved multi-use trail that starts at the Rocky Point Campground. I could see Mount Lassen from this campground. Altogether we spent three relaxing hours here, three hours that were unplanned on our drive across northeastern California on CA89. What a lovely surprise this was! This lake is ideal for kids, dogs, anglers and those wanting something more relaxing than Lake Tahoe. The nearby town of Chester offers more amenities.

This is a nice lake close to Mount Lassen National Park. It is close to Chester. There is lodging around the lake and we have enjoyed dining in restaurants alongside the lake. In particular we have enjoyed fishing in the lake and catching trout. We have done this from shore.

to the lake. Quiet contemplative place. No boats on the lake. If you climb the mountains in Lassen Park, you will see Lake Almanor in the distance. Beautiful.

Lake Almanor is still, after so many years, an almost "hidden" gem of northern California. Plenty of places to stay for all incomes, sizes of groups..singles, families, family reunions. Good restaurants, friendly people...can be very hot in summer, but usually moderate to warm. Snow and great skiing at Mt. Lassen in winter. Treat yourself to a getaway that really is out of the way. Plenty of trails for hiking, biking, canoeing/boating on the lake.

Lake Almanor is the jewel of Plumas County California. What a beautiful destination, be it an overnight in a lovely B&B or a months stay in a rustic lakeside cabin. The lake is crystal clear, perfect for cruising around and sightseeing, especially in late spring with the snow still visible in many places. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy at Lake Almanor: from jet skiing, renting a pontoon boat, picnicking, swimming, fishing, barbecuing lakeside or just enjoying a good book while soaking up the sun....the list goes on and on! Visiting Lake Almanor is a must-do whenever you're in Northern California. A real treat for everyone!

In August we overnighted at Chester, brought a picnic lunch and found the beautiful public picnic site on the west side of Lake Almanor. Clean, great facilities--lunched at picnic table right on the lake with no fee.We then took the drive around the lake, over the dam and into the exclusive gated community of homes on the peninsula. This is a beautifully kept, low-key area with a golf course and country club in the center and a nice private beach for residents.Very nice and relaxing day trip.
