It was a small to medium size show room. I felt their merch was over priced. But it was a great last minute buy for activities to do with your kids or parties. They have since closed their doors and have relocated to Texas. This is no longer a shafter attraction. :(

I go every year to Insect Lore to get tiny caterpillars for my classroom. I am writing my first bad review on Tripadvisor because Insect Lore deserves it. Yes, the store is very kid friendly and eye catching. It has lots of hands on science kits for children--butterfly gardens, ant hills, ladybug farms, etc. In all the years I have purchased caterpillars, I have always had some make it to butterflies. BUT...The store was really busy and there was only one cash register with one clerk checking people out. I was in line behind people with HUGE orders and, after waiting fifteen minutes and not moving, some other employee finally showed up to try and help because the computer wasn't working correctly so they were writing down what people bought. It took me forty minutes to check out. Any store can have a bad day but when I went last year, the service was also really slow and there were no employees on the floor to answer questions then either. The service (or lack of it) is really a problem if you do not have a lot of time.

I took my granddaughters, age 6 and 12, for a visit. They were nearly entranced by the various 'bug' displays. Butterfly breeding is a high priority here. In addition to the various insects, the store sells lots of different science/bug oriented kits, cards and games. Adults can learn a thing or too, also.

This is where you go to get those live butterflys for your celebration. Educational and fun. Great gift shop for the kids to get educational toys for learning about bugs and the outdoors.

Big Green building - cannot miss this right off Shafter Highway. Very interesting to see the butterfly stages. We ended up getting an ant farm that our kids enjoyed watching develop. If you happen to be in North Kern County with your kids - recommend stopping by - you will only need 45 - 60 minutes.

The main business is breeding butterflies and ladybugs for schools and science - a most interesting process. The museum houses many exotic insects in non-threatening enclosures, and the staff is generous with information and, if you like, bringing a few bugs out for closer inspection.

the best part about this place is that it costs nothing to visit. However be sure to bring money to buy stuff because basically it's a store with some bugs in the walls

One of my son's favorite places to go. We come here every few months just to check out the bugs. On some mornings one of their curators will get out some of the huge roaches or other creepy crawlies for the kids to check out up close. My son loves this! We love watching the ladies in the lady bug rooms and the butterfly rooms. We never leave without our little jar of caterpillars to put in our butterfly garden. Please visit this great little museum. It is worth the short drive to Shafter to check it out!

And by little, it is small, but well worth the trip. It is designed to be mostly a store, however, the bugs are a very nice touch. It is a nice building that really makes you want to go in. Fun little place to take visitors and show off the Bako scenery.

This Bugseum is one building that you literally "Can't Miss!" It is bright yellow and green and covered in giant painted bugs. The Bugseum was massively fun for the children that I was with. They got to experience nature up-close-and-personal, seeing many bugs that they had never seen before. It turns out that the museum is only part of the experience, the place is actually a butterfly farm, and they built this museum only recently. This is well worth the detour off Hwy 99.

We love Insect Lore. My kids have had alot of their products. We went on a trip to Bass Lake and Yosemite and after passing Baskersfield, we saw a big sign for this place. We had to stop! Not far from the freeway. Building was so cute. Its a big gift shop and has a bunch of different bugs and stuff for the kids to see. Huge ant farm in the wall & butterfly wall. You can even see the workers in the back preparing orders to ship out. So glad we found this place.
