The Gibson Mansion, grandest in Woodland, has become more than a historical museum. They have inside tours but check on that schedule. They host public events, weddings, etc. as well civic events. During some events a blacksmith shop is running.Only street parking is available, so expect a short walk for the more popular events. The only place to eat nearby is El Patio (great) about five blocks East. The grounds are well shaded and well maintained.

We went to visit Woodland from Sacramento yesterday partly to see the Gibson House museum because their website says it is open the last Saturday of each month. Well, it was not open and furthermore there's a big sign at the entrance that says you need a permit to even take a picture of the place. It looked liked they were having a wedding. According to a local in town the place is never open, it's a wedding venue. My advice, make sure it will be open before you drive out there. I called first but there was only a canned message.

This beautiful mansion was one of the original town's land grants. It has been nicely restored along with barns, creamery and other out buildings. The docents give a good tour and it is a lovely place to relax under giant oak trees. It is a fun way to share history with children.
