We were lucky to visit this NWR while having a lot of rain and the water level had pushed a lot of rails and short birds to short. We got to see Sora walking on the road and many other birds in close distance. Very productive location for bird watching!!

This wildlife area is convenient to downtown Kenmare and there are a number of surround parks and viewing areas. There is a wide variety of birds; but, this is a major migrating route for Canadian geese and Kenmare has a big "Goose Fest" in the late summer.

Visited this refuge a few times while staying in Kenmare. Kenmare is right next to the refuge and middle Des Lacs Lake. The Des Lacs Scenic Backway is a beautiful drive which starts south of Kenmare and travels to the north of the refuge for 19 miles. Pretty woods, rolling, grassy hills, water and wildlife. Great place for birdwatching. The refuge headquarters is staffed and has information and there is a very nice view of the town of Kenmare and Des Lacs Lake from the refuge. Would definitely recommend if you enjoy seeing birds and other wildlife.

Lots of waterfowl during both spring and fall migrations, and check out the sharptail grouse dancing blinds in the spring!

The man came we step up over looked the lake, it was beautiful. Refuge building was closed when we went there. But it was close by and worth the trip
