This fort, now a state park, is the source of our cottage in Long Beach. Cottage #10 at the Anchorage Cottages is a 1933 army barracks that was bought from Fort Canby in the 1940's and trucked up the peninsula and placed on the ridge about 1.5 miles north of the current Long Beach. This fort is reminiscent of other forts along the Washington coast with old gun emplacements, etc and is near the USGS training school and the Lewis and Clark Museum on the north side of the Columbia River. It also provides access to the North Jetty and Waikkiki Beach overlooked by the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse.

Start with the interpretative center and spend some time looking at the exhibits. This was the home of the Lewis and Clark expedition while it wintered over in 1805. If you are interested in American history, this is a "must visit" stop. Friendly staff, well versed and ablt to answer even my mundane questions. The actual fort will take about 15 minutes to visit. Plan a two hour plus stop for this one. Part of the National Park system, fee unless you have the card. I feel this is wheelchair accessible but may take some effort. The interpretative center is handicap accessible. No camping, park closes at 5:00 PM.

Visiting the Interpretive Center (after figuring out the cash vs credit card system) we also took a brief look at the Ft Canby Battery. It was nothing like the Ft Stevens Battery we had visited in the morning, but was still interesting and worth a look. The Interpretive Center saved the day There is handicap parking at the base of the Interpretive Center, but bring your card. $10 to park and $5 to enter the Interpretive Center.

Brilliant and certainly not disappointing. If you visit Astoria you must go and have a look at this edge of the earth, windy, isolated atmospheric place

Another great state park in the PNW for history and beauty. Great base camp for the Washington side of the Columbia's mouth to explore from. So much to see and do!

So much great Lewis and Clark history in the Astoria Cape Disappointment area and this is no exception. Great museum and really helpful staff

I loved the whole visit. The parking is a challenge so be sure to read the signs. You need to get the permit before you get there or you'll have to double back and get it. Costs $10 for the day. You'll need several hours to do this one right. Tour the fort and then go into the Lewis and Clark interpretive center. It is truly well done and you will learn a lot!

So much history here...Visit the Museum, the gift shop or take a ride on a giant transport truck. It's worth a stop, especially for us Veterans! You'll really appreciate the stop. It'll take you a couple of hours, but you won't be sorry!

We stopped by this deserted park, it is not too busy in January. Great place to camp in the summer.
