I just hiked to the lookout at Desolation Peak. It was well worth the grueling 5 mile hike and 4400 foot elevation gain from the Ross lake. We did it on July 10, 2010 and the weather was very hot. I would recommend a lot of water and some snacks to keep your energy up.The views were fantastic and the wild flowers above the tree line were beautiful.

I just hiked Desolation Peak this weekend and it was awesome! I don't do a lot of hiking so it was pretty intense and difficult, but definitley worth it. The view from the top of the mountain is gorgeous! You can see the end of Ross Lake and the beginning of Canada. It took us about 4 hours to get to the top and A LOT of water. It was great!! I would reccomend paddling from Ross Lake Resort to Lightening Creek to camp then hike to the top from there. It's twelve miles of paddling, but if you go at the right time of day it's not difficult at all, but the way back is a little tricky with the wind.
