lake vermillion recreation area

We really enjoyed our two night stay in a camping cabin at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area. The view from the cabins was gorgeous, and the mooing cows when the lake was quiet were quite entertaining. My children loved the beach and playground! The bathrooms were reasonably clean, and the cabins were just right for our family. The porches on the cabins were the best part, and made it easy to enjoy the beautiful setting. I highly recommend Lake Vermillion to anyone looking to get away for a camping adventure.Beware of the smelly lake, though. Our children, swimsuits and towels smelled awful after swimming in the algae-ridden water at the swimming area.

One of our favorites state parks on this 2 year journey RV’ing the US. Very clean park. Check-in was smooth and staff was friendly. Campground includes boat ramp, tent camping, cabins, kids playground and dedicated swimming area off the lake. Our campsite was level and site clean. Verizon phones got weak 4g. DirecTV (free standing satellite) had no issue getting signal. Campground is about 10 mins from freeway (i90) and 30 mins from a decent grocery store. Our only issue is the late checkout time, which is 4pm… so don’t arrive too early. Reservations available online for this state park. While at this campground we visited Falls Park in Sioux Falls and the Corn Palace.

We did not know that eastern South Dakota was so lush and green!! The lake area was beautiful!! Being fairly small, it looked like a secret place for families to enjoy without all the chaos of larger areas :-)

Just 5 miles south of I-90 about 30 miles west of Sioux Falls, this Recreation Area is a peaceful retreat for fishing, birding and camping. We have camped here several times enroute to the Black Hills and enjoy the lake-side campsites which deliver great sunset views. Pelicans were in abundance during a mid-May visit and other land and sea birds abound here too. South Dakota Parks rents bikes and canoes and a nice swimming beach is available for warm weather days. If you are looking for a peaceful escape to nature, this is the place for you.
