We have done trail rides at Palmer Gulch Stables three times now, and every time we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff is friendly and efficient, the horses are relaxed and seem to know their jobs well, and it's clear that they're well cared for. I would recommend booking your ride ahead of time so you can choose the time & route you prefer, as they tend to book up quickly.

This was the only thing that was good at the KOA (and it is not run by the KOA). The ride was just the right length and our driver allowed the kids to sit up with him, which they loved. The food and entertainment was just right. Out of all the dinner shows that I looked at, I am glad that we chose this one because the food was cooked right in front of us. The only thing I wish is that they had a lower price for the kids who are just going to eat a hot dog and not the steak entrée.

We did the evening Chuckwagon supper ride and a morning trail ride through Elkhorn Pass. Both experiences were well worth the cost. I would highly recommend either one. It made for a memorable summer vacation. I would definitely do it again.

Palmer Gulch Stables is located at the Mount Rushmore KOA . There you can enjoy a nice meal, specialty coffee/tea or summer treat in one of the several places on site before or after your ride. The KOA also seems like a nice place to make as a home base for campers (check out reviews for that site as well). We pre-booked before we left Canada then drove locally from Rapid City. During peak season, it would be advisable. They probably run close to 75 horses for a variety of excursion packages. Their website is pretty helpful. A larger operation but very professional and friendly. This is a basic trail ride--single file and a consistent easy walking pace. We were in a group of about 15 people on a 90 minute ride. It was relaxing and gentle--very recommendable for beginner riders. The guides were capable and professional, the horses were well matched to riders and it was all very safe. Now the good stuff: regardless of your riding skills, you'll enjoy truly beautiful scenery, wildlife sightings and fresh air. Hope you're good at one-handed photos otherwise just enjoy the view! During our stay in the Black Hills we also did another trail ride with a different outfit & you can search the review there.
