Lovely drive to the dam, easy to get find. Impressive structure. Nothing to dislike. Very similar to every other dam on the Missouri, built by the Corp of Engineers.

This is an impressive dam. The sunsets are pretty and the fishing above and below the dam are outstanding

If they are offering tours, take one. This is a very good educational damn and a marvel to build at the time.

We only visited the information center here, but in doing so we learned about South Dakotan friendliness. The volunteer on duty told us about the dam and lake and even took pictures of us with our cameras. Our visit was a great introduction to the hospitality of South Dakotans. We just didn't have enough time to fully experience the dam.

While staying in Pierre we saw all the big boats parked by our hotel we decided we should have a look at the Oahe Dam. They were having a big fishing contest. The locals say this area is the best fishing in the area year round, especially walleye. The Oahe Dam is one of the world largest earth dams. It is run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We had visited a large earth dam in Montana, at Fort Peck that was very interesting. This one is not as big but still is large. There is a nice visitor center on the east end of the dam. Not far from the visitor center is the Oahe Chapel that has great views of the lake. There are places to camp & many areas for boaters. It is a very popular place for tourists. They offer a tour of the power plant. We drove below & on the high road. The dam created Lake Oahe, the 4th largest reservoir in the U.S. and goes 231 miles up to Bismarck ND. It is home to threatened and endangered species of wildlife. Watefowl migrate through this area also. It connects the two capitol cities, North and South Dakota. You could spend a lot of time here fishing, wildlife watching & camping.

Beautiful view of the Missouri River, lots of history about the area including pictures of the town/buildings that once occupied the place the river now runs. Great stop on your way through.

The lake is beautiful. There is lots of area to spread out and have a picnic. At the visitor center they give a lot of info about the lake and dam.

Best Walleye fishing in South Dakota and great state park. Super clean shower rooms, and lots of shade. They just added 7 cabins, which have great views of the Missouri river. Planning another trip in Sept and will try the cabins then.

Beneath the dam are some great campgrounds and marina. Only about a 7 mile bike ride back into Fort Pierre. Above the dam is Lake Oahe where there is some excellent Walleye fishing. This area is great for any outdoor enthusiast. Fishing, kayaking, scuba diving (scuba shop in town for rental gear), biking, hiking, camping, disc golf, waterskiing and just chilling out on the river sitting on a floatie.

Clean energy from a hydroelectric facility is always interesting to me. The dam was dedicated in 1962 by President Kennedy and has been producing clean energy ever since.

I don't own a boat so I don't really know what this looks like from that side of things. Take the tour...see the technology. It's amazing what man can do! There are some picnic spots and camp areas in the vacinity. Pack a basket and spend the day....you'll be relaxed from all the fresh air!

The walleyes were numerous. Great size on the catfish. The water was very clear. TONS of boats on the 4th of July.
