If you want to see a first run movie in the style that you use to see movies, The Gem Theater, is a step back into time. Original movie set up with red curtains, cartoons before the movie, candy & popcorn for $2.00. We never pay those high movie prices with the Gem in our neighborhood. Great experience everytime.

Love the Gem. The movies are great, prices fantastic, people are friendly...it doesn't get better than this for a great night out. It is very nice to walk into a piece of local history and still see a great movie with great sound. Will go over and over.

My Wife and I enjoy first run movies to the tune of 2 or more each week. The Gem is the oldest restored theater in our area and a visit will put you back into one's childhood very quickly. Pricing is also a plus for both tickets and popcorn. A very pleasant place to watch a movie (especially in the balconey when open). Awesome place to enjoy a night out with Family.

I was very torn between giving this theater a 3 star vs a 4 star rating. I chose 4 and will clarify my struggle at the end, but first, about the theater. It is in very good shape for an old theater (it was built in the early 30's). I truly expected low quality all around, considering the great price. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a very nice quality, clear, good sized, movie screen and a very good sound system(being from a family of professionals in the fine arts arena, these things are important). The snacks are very reasonably price, which was another great plus. The staff is very nice, and you just can't beat the price of tickets, especially for first run movies. We saw Hero6 Sunday Evening on the opening weekend of the film and at $5 an adult, $4 for seniors (sorry I didn't make note of the kids price), you just can't beat this for a great night out no matter what your situation - family, date night, etc. So, if it were not for the next two points, I would give this attraction a 5. But... first, There is no fist floor restroom. My 81 year old mom came with us and she cannot do stairs of any kind. If we were to sit on the first floor she would potentially have to climb a good sized staircase several times so we decided to have her make the trek once to the second floor thinking that once up and once down would be it for the night. Once on the second floor we found she still had to go up another smaller staircase and then down several steps to her seat, so when mid way through the movie, she needed facilities she had to endure quite a lot of physical distress. I called the theater to inquire as to whether or not there was any kind of restroom at all on the first floor, even for employees, that the staff may have failed to inform us about, and was graciously informed that there is not. So this venue is not handicap friendly for someone who may needs a restroom while there. Second, the theater was filthy in the area we sat (the balcony) the floor was riddled with trash and spilled drinks all over the floor that had apparently not been cleaned up by the staff between shows (it was also sad to see that visitors left their trash all around in the first place). My suggestion would be for the owners if they see this review is that they correct their staff on proper care of the facility. My son, who frequents the theater, was very surprised at the condition of the balcony, where he always sits, and said this is not the norm so this is the reason I only removed one star instead of two. With that being said, when we go back to visit our kids in NC, we will definitely take in a show at the Gem theater. It was fun to be in this old theater that reminded us of when we were young, and it did not bust our wallets. A truly refreshing night at the movies.

Perfect experience, if you like family-focused films. Very low prices, including admission and cheap candy. It's almost like a museum. Beautiful exterior. Wonderful that it has been preserved.

This theater has been here as long as I remember since I was a kid.Great prices on tickets & concessions

We've been here many times when the new kids movies come out. The inside is not as nice as your newer buildings but it's clean and the newer places can't touch this one on price. You get 2-3x the amount of concessions here than at the big box theaters. Not to mention its has great history in the building!

This is the best (and only) place to see a movie in Kannapolis. All the others have died and gone away but this historic theater is a great place. It's also the cheapest. You can see a first run movie for $5 for a regular admission. There are also senior, child and matinee pricing. The snacks are reasonable too. I can see a movie, get a drink, popcorn and candy all for $11. These are the traditional drinks, popcorn or candy, no nachos, hot pretzels, pizza or hotdogs. The theater has actually been location for several movies as well. The staff is courteious and the selection of drinks and candy is better than most other theaters as well. They also have a balcony and fills up quick on certain movies. Chairs are very comfortable but not the stadium style seating except for the balcony. In Summer they offer a "Summer Camp" on Tuesdays where the movie is only $1. Great way to catch a movie you missed or relive an old favorite. Love this place! Some but not all seats have a drink holder so you don't have to place your drink on the ground so you might need a small flashlight if you are looking for one.For handicap there is only a bathroom on the 2nd floor and no elevator. You may have to ask the staff if you can use their private party room if it's not in use.
