As we were driving through NC we wanted to stop somewhere to see a plantation home so we searched Trip Advisor for something in the area we were in and this lovely Liberty Hall plantation popped up. We drove into Kenansville, right off of I-95, and stopped in at the visitors center. It was so quaint and the tour guide, Jeff, was right there giving us a history of the Kenan family, the plantation, etc. We quickly decided to take the tour and very glad we did. It was a gem for sure. Jeff was a great tour guide, very informative and fun. He really took the time to show us all the beautiful items in the home, the history of the plantation and family, and so much more. Well worth the stop. Kudos to the Kenan family for preserving the family home and keeping it's history alive.

We wanted to see a plantation home as we drove through NC. We enjoyed it very much. The guide was very informative & friendly. The house is filled with wonderful history & antiques, most are part of the original home. We opted for a shorter tour, but I felt like we got a great feel for the lives lived there. I appreciated that he didn't skip over or sugar coat the facts of slavery in the history. Really the only downside was the heat... Which they can't control. There was a AC in the visitors center and maybe a little in the house but it was still hot & sweaty by the time we got through the grounds. Overall it was a great experience & I would recommend it :).

This side trip to Kenansville, NC is well worth the diversion if you're headed out to the Outerbanks or driving down I-95. It's a "hidden gem" rich in southern history and old plantation life. The Liberty Hall restoration is fantastic and the tour guide adds a unique and personal aspect to the tour of the facilities. You should plan on at least two hours since you definitely want to take the tour through the main Kenan residence. Arrive at the plantation headquarters and pay a small nominal fee (well worth the price). The entire plantation complex is superbly appointed in antiques and artifacts of the era. Your tour guide expertly takes you through each room and explains both the Kenan family's history as well as interesting facts about life in the old south. There are some amazing articles in the home that any history buff will appreciate.Next door is the Cowan Historical site (unfortunately closed on our trip) that has some restored buildings and other pieces of southern heritage.

We traveled to Liberty Hall in Kenansville NC recently and really enjoyed it. The tour guide was great - you could tell he loved his job and telling us about the history of the house, land and the people of owned it. The house and its furnishings were well preserved and gave us a glimpse of the occupants' past life. The grounds were well kept and the dogwood trees were in bloom - just beautiful. What a relaxing afternoon.
