Shining Rock wilderness is really great for a day hike, but in my experience, it can be a bit tough to get the best camping spots for backpacking on crowded weekends. I think that the spur from the Blue Ridge Parkway up over Black Balsam Knob makes a great day hike with unparalleled exposed views. My favorite in the region.

Park at Black Balsam parking area just of the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 420. Lots of other ways to reach Cold Mountain i.e. off NC 215 at the Daniel Boone Boy Scout camp but harder to find... or you could ford the Pigeon river and bushwhack up the mountain. Been there done that but not for the faint-hearted or out of shape

We just stayed at Camp Daniel Boone Boyscout Camp on Cold Mountain and couldn't be happier. Beautiful scenery and a river for fishing. The weather was cool in the 70s and the water a chilly 60 degrees. They have a lot of high adventure things to do in the National Forest. Pack your lunch because there are no stores or restaurants near.

Cold Mountain has gained attention from the book & movie. When you've lived in Western NC, as I have, and traveled along the parkway ... you realize that it is one of many nice peaks. Personally, I think the view from Mt. Pisgah IS much better -- Mt. Mitchell, too!
