It is well laid out, and very tourist friendly. The staff is very helpful and willing to share information. Its a nice respite on a hot and humid day.

Among all the things there are to see and do in the Clark/Floyd County area, do not miss the Carnegie Center. They have the most amazing underground railroad exhibit. And one special feature is the well documented story of a woman who made it to Union lines and her adventures traveling, and becoming a part of, the army’s victories in some of the most famous battles of the civil war. What a story! There are other cool features of this building. It’s architecture is interesting, inside and out. And they have interesting exhibits beside the underground railroad. They have art galleries and a cute exhibit called “Grandpa Makes a Scene”. All this and it’s free. Do not miss it!

As I said this is an overlooked gem in New Albany. It is worth a visit on a hot muggy day to beat the heat and see some local and regional art.

The exhibit on slavery in New Albany prior to and during the Civil War--especially at it relates to the underground railroad--is excellent. The variety of material--from bills of sale, copies of newspaper articles, photographs, and commentary from those living at that time who offered stories about what happened in the community--was excellent. I especially enjoyed the film that we saw halfway through. I am especially pleased that this museum celebrates local artists. A wonderful and significant gift to the downtown area.

We're glad you and your family enjoyed your visit to the Carnegie Center! I am sorry it has taken us this long to respond to your review; we will be responding to future TripAdvisor reviews on a more regular basis. As a department of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, we are pleased to be able to offer free admission. We have a fun scavenger hunt of the dioramas for young people; if you and you children did not get to complete the scavenger hunt on your visit, we'll be glad to provide you with one on your next visit. And of course our Underground Railroad exhibits are on permanent display, anytime you do come back.

Thank you for your positive comments about the Carnegie Center, and we're especially pleased that your kids enjoyed visiting! I am sorry it has taken us this long to respond to your review, from now on I will be responding to any future TripAdvisor reviews on a regular basis. Our free Family Fun Workshops are held the second Saturday of each month. We also have a scavenger hunt for our exhibit "Grandpa Makes A Scene: The Yenawine Dioramas" that is available anytime, and we have suggestions of ways for families to look together at the art on display included in a gallery guide for each art exhibit. Our Underground Railroad exhibit was designed with grades 4 and up in mind, but we've found that even younger children can take something they've learned away with them.

We've been hosting the New Albany-Floyd County Secondary Schools art show for some time; in fact, 2014 was our 42nd year of doing so. We are happy that we can support and encourage our community's young artists in this way. And we look forward to seeing you again.

We're so glad you decided to stop in and add us to your trip! I apologize it has taken us this long to respond to your review, I will now be responding to any future TripAdvisor reviews on a regular basis. The Yenawine Dioramas are truly enjoyed by visitors of all ages, and we even have descendants of Mr. Yenawine's visit on occasion to see the exhibit. Our intent with the Underground Railroad exhibit was to present an accurate picture of Underground Railroad activity (and the need for it) in this area, as there are so many misconceptions that have been perpetuated about the Underground Railroad in general, and your children's responses show that we have been successful. Thank you for your positive comments about the Carnegie Center, and we hope you can visit us again.
