I was required to go to the Swope for my Art History class. Once I entered the door the women at the desk was very helpful in explaining the overall layout of the gallery. The museum was very clean and most of the artwork fit the gallery very well. I was happy to be in and out the gallery in such a timely manner but still had enough time to view the artwork. A fun thing to do if you are visiting Terre Haute for the day!!

We visited the museum and was pleasantly surprised at what we found. It had lots of good pieces of art and was well worth the time to go there. Nice and small and easy to do in an hour or two.

An amazing collection of American artists' works in a pretty unlikely place. Small but mighty is the Swope with serious and wonderful paintings and sculpture on two floors and community education programs that reach out year-round. And it's all free. What is not to like?

This museum has to be one of the best preserved art deco spaces in the country. If you are into architecture, this is a “must see”. The museum is small, but has a lot of variety in the collection on two levels. Mostly American I saw Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Anna Hyatt Huntington and Andy Warhol. There is no charge for entry, but donations are appreciated. Photography is allowed and the staff is friendly. Parking is on the street but it is free and seemed relatively safe. Since the museum is small it is family friendly, kids won’t be too bored.

The permanent collection of 20th century American art is excellent, with very informative brochures for each period. The two temporary exhibits of lndiana artists were also fine.

Older building with many art pictures throughout. Take the elevator and check out the displays upstairs. Only wish they would have had the other rooms finished while I was there. A must see and it also is FREE!

Without a doubt the finest art museum in west central Indiana and west central IL. The art changes on a regular basis and is an impressive collection. Do not miss this Terre Haute gem. BTW it is FREE!

As other reviewers have already said, it is a small art museum filled with delightful finds and at the right cost...free! There are works by famous artists (Grant Wood for example) and not so famous artists in an eclectic setting. When visiting Terre Haute it is well worth an hour of your time. Located in downtown Terre Haute you get bragging righs for saying you were at the "crossroads of America".

This small two story art museum is huge in quality. I loved the pieces they have and they way they grouped them based on the era. They have pamphlets near the art that has pictures of the art plus other information about the era. Kiddy corner from the Clabber Girl museum, also free with a requested donation of $5.00 per adult. I viewed all the art than made certain I paid on the way out. I am happy to help support their museum, please stop by and check it out. I love the Indiana Impressionist area.

First, the Swope is free thanks to the wishes of its founder. It is easily located in downtown Terre Haute near the intersection of US 40 and 41--the old "Crossroads of America." Inside, a very good collection of art predominantly by regional artists of the 19th and 20th century. One of Grant Wood's best paintings. Changing temporary exhibits as well.Located about 3 miles north of I-70--take 41 North to the downtown area and it will be on your right about 4 blocks east.Nearby by is Boo's--good local eatery adjacent to the "Crossroads." Well worth a visit.

The Swope concentrates on American art and has an excellent collection of midwestern artists, particularly from the '30's such as Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and Grant Wood. They own at least a dozen of Andy Warhal's Marilyn Monroe series and at one fundraiser I attended a few years ago that featured the Marilyns there was a lot of fun for people who dressed up as Marilyn and competed for "best Marilyn." The museum was donated by a local businessman many years ago with the stipulation that admission must always be free for the public. The Swope usually has a touring show on display as well as its work from its permanent collection. It is not a very big museum, but it is very good at what it does.
