Great museums. A must see for anyone who likes military history! Both museums has an amazing amount of artifacts.

Not near anything. I wont be back again as I was there for a week and the main focus of this area is fishing and hunting. Those are not activities that interest me. I went for personal reasons and also I had never been before.

I was stationed at Fort Riley 1969-1970 so I wanted to come back and see where my first son was born and visit the areas I worked. As you would imagine it has changed tremendously. For instance you just can't drive through the base now all passengers must show picture ID. The post is now much larger and busier than when I was there. This may be due to other base consolidations or when I was there many of the soldiers were over in Viet Nam. The main post area is very nice and historic with buildings from the late 1800s. There are a couple of museums, monuments and lots of old military pieces to look at by the museums. In the area is Milford and Tuttle reservoirs which are great for fishing and water activities. Kansas State is only 20 minutes to the East and Junction City is the town to the West where you can visit the park on Washington and see great memorials dedicated to Veterans and Law Enforcement Officers. I highly recommend a visit to all these areas if you find yourself near Fort Riley.

being a parent of an solider, I found that there was not much to do while he was at work. You need a car to get around and not much for a city other than 30 minutes away.

Sorry, could not resist this, it was too obvious… Fort Riley is an actual active fort, thus you need to show ID to get in. In fact, I was scared how easy it looked, she scanned my ID and waved me in, even gave me a map. Nobody checked if I ever left… There are several museums on the premises: the Infantry & the Cavalry & the Custer House & the Territorial Capitol. Signage on the base is for actual personnel there, not for visitors, good thing I asked (and got) a map. Both the Infantry and the Cavalry Museums were excellent: plenty of historical documentation accompanied by audio-video materials, nobody to show you anything or to answer questions, you are on your own, but what you discover is precious. Unfortunately, the Custer House was closed for the season. If you have any interest in history, do plan some time, the museums cover all periods of existence of the above Army divisions. I enjoyed it immensely. Presentation was just historically oriented, without the usual political bias, it was very moving, patriotic and educational. God Bless our Troops!

Fort Riley really has a nice range of easily accessed sites (only a couple show up on Tripadviser).The Calvary Museum (think General Custer who was stationed there) as well as a host of other individuals to the present and current military Calvary (tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, apache helicopters, etc.).Fort Riley is also home to the First Territorial Capital of Kansas (on the west side of the installation, most easily accessed from the Ogden (West) Gate.The other thing that the astute traveler will note, is that the limestone structures and design of facilities on Main Post at Fort Riley are identical to those at Fort Leavenworth (KS), Fort Leonard Wood (MO), and even at the Headquarters of Yellowstone National Park (Mammoth Hot Springs). Obviously an efficient design or a really good sales team!

While visiting the Custer House, my husband and I decided to visit the Calvary Museum across the street. It was so well done and we really enjoyed the history through the different eras of the Calvary. We were so glad that we stopped to see it.

I was traveling across Kansas and made a point to visit Ft Riley and the US Calvary Museum. This unique museum has some incredible history from the US Calvary from the horse solders to the current armored cavalry. I enjoyed my day in the museum as well as several example of armor from World War II. I especially enjoyed the history and uniforms from the Custer area. I highly recommend this excellent example of our history!

If you love old architecture, stories of the "old days", and the United States Army, Fort Riley is a must see. Not only were we privileged to live on this beautiful installation, we learned about our nations military history in the museums on post. The historical society does an amazing job preserving this post. I love their haunted tours and Christmas tours through the huge houses on post. I miss this place very much! Apple Days is also a great event worth traveling in to see!

An awesome collection and historical record of the United States Cavalry from its earliest days in the late 1700s as horse-mounted dragoons thru today's mechanized vehicles.A very impressive collection of uniforms and artifacts from all the major periods in the US Cavalry evolution through modern times. We drove 2 hours out of our way to visit. Well worth the deviation. You won't be sorry.

Fort Riley, KS is a very interesting and historical facility. It is a garrison for the Big ed One infantry and Gen. George A. Custer and his wife, Libby, were here for a time. Their home is a museum housing many period pieces depicting day-to-day living in the West. Also here is the General's Color Guard Cavalry. These soldiers demonstrate the fignting skills of mounted soldiers. There are several museums on base that are devoted to the history of the Army Infantry and how life was lived during the 1800's.I recommend the Fort for any military buff!

Fort Riley has several old buildings that are beautiful in their architecture. The 1st Infantry Division Museum, U.S. Cavalry Museum, and The Custer House are all well worth visiting. Surrounding the Cavalry Museum outside are several Military Vehicles, as well as a few Equestrian Statues. Beautiful place to spend a few hour.

The base has excellent services and is excellent at hosting events and including civilians as visitors as though "one of their own" with respect both for the troops who serve and returned in kind by those who serve their country. Thank you.

I lived on Fort Riley for three years while in the Army. This place has a lot of history the buildings are unlike any I have seen at any other military installation giving a sense of history. The place has grown and modernized since I last lived here as well.
