We found this to be one of the most stunning beaches on this side of the Island. The water is turquoise, the beach is soft, and the waves are big and beautiful! It's a fun place to play in the waves or boogie board, but be aware that the waves are VERY powerful. There are strong rip tides and surf breaks, and there's no life guard. While we were there, a somewhat athletic man was knocked out and bloodied in the waves. My husband and another man struggled against the waves to carry this somewhat unconscious man back to shore. When having so much fun, it's easy to forget the danger, but I can definitely see how a spinal or other serious injury is possible here. So, definitely enjoy this beautiful beach, but respect the water and waves! (And stay with your kids!)

small beautiful beach with stunning water and big waves. The kids loved playing in the waves....very powerful though. You need to be very respectful of the undertow. It is a rocky walk down to the beach....best not done with flipflops. Definitely a must see if you are in the area

This beach is gorgeous, however, when we went, it was very rocky, sort of difficult to access. I also somehow got swept over to the left side of the beach, with strong current and a rip tide. Thankfully some friendly beach-goers helped me and my sister get out. Just be careful as there is no lifeguard and stay close to shore.

Love the way it makes you feel like traveling back in time. so pretty the beach. how ever more trees would have been nice.great shore line beach and ample parking with security. worth the time seekng a secluded oasis.

Strong wave action from winter storms have stripped all the sand away from this usually picture perfect beach. Waves came right up to the edge of the lava. Have been here February, April and June previous trips and have never seen the beach with only exposed rock - hence the poor rating. Normally the sand here is plentiful, fine, and soft. Waves can be great for boogie boarding (winter) or completely calm for swimming (summer). There's a paved road and parking lot.

This beach is absolutely breathtaking. A great place to go snorkeling & swim with the fish & turtles. I had a fabulous time.

We have been here before, actually it was our favourite spot last time (November 2013). Spectacular beach, sand, water, waves, everything.. This visit in February 2015 was disappointing as hardlly no beach, only a few sandy spots amongst the lava. t It's a short walk over lava to get to beach & once there, we found the sand had been washed away by winter storms. Not the same beach at all. We were told the beach would be restored, probably next winter. It is still a beautiful spot to enjoy!

it's amazing how you can turn a corner and want to come to a complete stop even before you get to the beach. The water is clear enough to find fish at your feet when you waist deep! Once the sand comes back I consider this the beach beach I've ever been to!!

Getting to the beach is very tricky but you definitely need a good car or van to get there. Forget about a normal car you would definitely need a SUV or truck. The road conditions will destroy your car if you are not careful. The beach is o.k. but it is not Hapuna or Mauna Kea beach!

This bay was absolutely gorgeous! Crystal turquoise waters! We were looking for a beach with more sand in February. Maybe there's more sand there in the summer?

Kua Bay is very close to Kona. You can't miss the turn. There is a huge cinder mound by the beach. The beach is beautiful; however it can be extremely crowded especially in the morning. I have found the the best time to go is in the afternoon after 1pm. Most of the tourists are gone. You have to be careful. The waves break very fast. You just have to be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you know how to enter into the waves. If you don't, chances are you will get knocked around. I usually tell friends dive into the wave as it approaches and don't turn your back. You will love the location. It is one of the nicest spots on the Big Island. It is a part of Hawaii's paradise.
