Everyone must try this when in Shullsburg. When you put your car in neutral you will go up the hill backwards.

This is so trippy, but a must have when in Shullsburg. I'm so amazed at how it works...I want to return and try on a skateboard and other vehicles to see if it has the same affect.

Crazy! After moving to the area we put this off for a while but finally found it and keep going back. We have tried it in multiple vehicles and works every time. While in town go south on Judgment and out of town maybe a mile. Keep a look out for the big " G H" on the road and stop right at it. Put your vehicle in neutral and it on.

Sometimes the quirkiest listings in State Tourism Websites or Travel Guides just jump out at me. Gravity Hill was one of them. Reading about a place in the road, that when you stop, put your car in Neutral and let off of the brake, your car will travel uphill, sounded like a farce to me. But we were going to be in Monroe which was not to far away and it was free, so all it was going to cost me was a bit of gas and some time. Ok add it to the list.My wife was more skeptical than I was and not convinced it was worth our time, but we drove out of Monroe and headed towards Shullsburg and County Road U. We stopped at a convenience store to get ice outside of town and my wife asked about Gravity Hill inside. The clerk had never heard of it before, but another patron said it had been a long time since he was there but he remembered it was south of town. After a few miles south of Shullsburg we saw a large capital GH and a line drawn under the letters painted on the road, no other markings or signs and figured this was it. So I stopped the car, did what it said online and presto the car was moving back up the hill we just came down. My wife freaked. We did it again, same thing. We then turned around and tried it from the other side of the road. This time we went forward instead of backwards. I know there is some sort of explanation and I have heard there are several other places in the USA that one can do this, but if you want a kick or scare or surprise someone, you got to try this.

My husband found this "attraction" while on the Wisconsin website looking for vacation destinations. The whole phenomenon intrigued us so much that we added it to our itinerary! We plugged the website address into our GPS and because we stopped at a local convenience store in Shullsburg, a very nice man, actually told us it was SOUTH County Road U...or we might not have found it. A short drive is involved and watch for the letters "GH" that are painted on the highway. Stop your vehicle on the line and put it in neutral and "feel" what happens!!!! We did it three times and then went and turned around and did it from the opposite direction. All that I can say is...it is totally UNEXPLAINABLE!!!!! You have to experience it to believe it! While in the area, one can stop in Shullsburg and have cheese or just enjoy the Wisconsin countryside. Beautiful scenery!
