The Harrisburg Cemetery is something I grew up hearing about. My grandfather in the 1940's was Burgess of a bordering town and would hear he and his friends talk of the history often. We decided to take our grandsons for a walk through history. It's amazing! Our grandsons found it very peaceful and thought (from the view of 5 and 9 year olds) it was a nice place for people to sleep. We felt no fear while in the area and wouldn't hesitate to return again. We've been to other cemetery's to trace family history, but none compare. Many are buried in the Hershey Cemetery and other than Milton Hershey, it doesn't compare to the Harrisburg Cemetery.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Harrisburg Cemetery. It was very peaceful and I enjoyed wondering around exploring. I was so excited when I found some hidden gems that I didn't read about. I totally felt safe driving to and in the cemetery. I am a single female historian and I travel to many, many cemeteries. I am always careful. There was no threat there. The cemetery began in 1845 so I hope to see some signs of wear as that makes the cemetery a little more magical and grand to someone like me. Of course I always lock my purse and valuables in the trunk of the car while I'm exploring at all the cemeteries I visit. There were people working in the cemetery, jogging, mother's pushing babies and I think I saw a couple dog walkers. It was a beautiful fall day. A women came up to me and asked if I needed help finding anybody which I thought was awesome. I had studied the cemetery for a couple weeks prior to my visit so I was familiar with the layout and who was buried there. It's definitely worth the visit if you are in the area. The grounds were very well kept. Can't wait until I'm in that area again to visit. Thank you to the ones working so hard to maintain this historic cemetery! Happy Holidays!

You can get the most out of a visit to the Harrisburg Cemetery by taking a tour guided by volunteers from one of the historical associations in town. They can point out where the famous people of state history are buried. Don't miss seeing the graves of Confederate soldiers who, after being wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, were brought to Harrisburg for medical care but died. Union soldiers likewise are buried here; you can tell them apart from the Confederates by the fact that someone maintains small American flags on the graves of Northern soldiers, while no flags at all fly over the graves of the Southerners.

My husband and I wanted to walk through this cemetary and were quite excited to do so, until we found how you would enter and where it was.We travelled to this area specifically to go through cemetaries and hopefully find the graves of some of the dignitaries in the area.Well, scared is not a word I use often, but upon finding out where this was and the entrance was off a street that didn't look safe at all. Although we are from another country, driving down the street, and seeing our vehicle eyed from the moment we entered the street I was hesitant. First off the gates were completely rusted, chipped paint, and one of the huge gates were bent to the ground. The trees were overgrown, and very uninviting. I have to say we didn't feel safe enough to park our car, or even enter and we feared if we left our vehicle it would be vandalized. So I can't review this place, inside, as we didn't feel safe enough to enter. Understandably it is not the fault of the Cemetary itself, if it maybe looked a bit more inviting upon the entrance, I would have felt safer.

har har. Actually worth a look though... never thought I'd see a cemetery on TripAdvisor, but this one is pretty "nice" and worth a visit for some creepy old beauty. Close to the capital.

We loved going through this cemetery. It's all that you could hope for in an old cemetery...tree roots, fallen over headstones, the utter stereotype of an old cemetery. Loved it!

Quiet place to visit, big on beauty. Lovely marble headstones and landscaped gardens and pond.

Why do they put fences around cemeteries...people are dieing to get in, anyway go see the civil war soldiers north and south buried together. a lot history here.

Not well maintained, debris scattered everywhere. Older graves and stones neglected when they fall.

Beautiful cemetary. Be sure to watch out for when they have guided tours to learn about the famouse and infamous residents buried there.

My mother was doing a garden club showing at this cemetery because they have so many different type of trees on the grounds. Normally I would have never thought to visit a cemetery for anything other than to see a relative's grave, but I wanted to support my mother and went anyways. I am glad I did. My girlfriend and I had a good time seeing all the old grave stones and large buildings that some people are burried in. Make sure to look along the side facing Harrisburg to see the stone buidlings. And while I don't really care too much about the different kind of plants and trees that are there, but if you do this is a great place to visit. We spent at least an hour there and only walked about 1/4 of the grounds.

This historic burial ground was founded in 1845, but there are earlier burials, including those of American Revolutionary soldiers. Also found there are the graves of many notable Harrisburg families and Pennsylvania politicians, including Simon Cameron, Lincoln's Secretary of War, and a number of Pennsylvania governors and representatives to the U.S. Congress.There are many narrow lanes that wander throughout the graves, which are marked with a variety of headstones and monuments. There are a holding vault where the deceased were held until the spring thaw and a lovely caretaker's house.The cemetery is a good example of the 19th century romantic landscape movement that made cemeteries "destinations" for strolling and even picnicking. There are many beautiful plantings, and spring is a great time to visit to see the flowering trees.The cemetery is accessed from State Street, just east of the State Street Bridge entrance.Be sure to see the view of the city skyline from the cemetery's western edge.

People look for different things in a cemetery. We like a nice setting, but we also like sculpture like tomb markers and decorative mausoleums. We found this to be much more of a head stone only area. It is fenced in, so check hours. It closed at 4PM on weekdays.

This cemetary is one of the most beautiful ones I've seen. Bonaventure in Savannah has nothing on this one. Although it is interesting to look at the various headstones, you would also appreciate it for the gardening. The trees are gorgeous and the place as a whole has a very serene feeling.
