The Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve is a well conceived Otsego county park located near Johannesburg, Michigan. It consists of nearly 800 acres of hardwoods, pines and meadow areas with a series of well maintained hiking trails. The trails are well marked and there are a series of inconspicuous, small sign posts with educational labels pointing out and describing the flora and fauna. In the winter they groom the trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There are also days in the summer when you can ride horses along the trails. The preserve also offers a great opportunity for school and scout field trips. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday, and the hours vary on the other days so check before you go. This is a wonderful site for enjoying natural Michigan in a quiet, peaceful setting.
