The staff at Port Austin Kayak is so nice. We had a great time taking the kayaks out and going out to Turnip Rock. It is such a beautiful place, and such a shame that the area around it is private land. On the plus side, it does make the trip out more of an adventure! The weather matters so call ahead before you drive out there, especially if you live far. If the weather is windy, the water will be too choppy and they won't rent out kayaks. I look forward to going again for a third time!

We arrived around 10:30 to pick up kayaks from the store and launch out the back. The staff was informative and got us on our way quickly. They told us to expect about a 4-5 hour loop, but it only took us about 3 hours in all. The water level is higher than it's been in recent years, so we were able to take a direct route rather than going around a shallow area, which I think made it quicker. We hit some waves toward the final turn, but none of us had much trouble, even in our group of novice kayakers. Overall really great experience - we all agreed we'd like to do it again!

We have kayaked this many time! If you head out to your West you will hit this huge rock, you can climb upon and we have had lunch, although its a favorite place for seagulls to hang out! If you head out to the light house there is a reef you can beach your kayak on. Great place to snorkel too! We were lucky enough to catch 'owners" of the lighthouse and got to go in it some years back! If you head out East you will come to Turnip Rock. Just a neat sight to see! You will pass some "sea caves" also. If you love snorkeling you can actually find arches underwater were you can pass to the other side. Because of recent vandals and rude people they don't let you get up onto the shore very high. The water is pretty shallow along the route heading to Turnip Rock, and depending on the water levels many times you will see islands that are fun to stop and have a break or lunch. We have kayaked this with our girls at age 6 and up. Only hit one storm and it came fast and furious so always be aware! They do have a kayak rental place in town if you don't have your own!

They told us the 2 man was a dog in the water and they were right. Fun time, did Flat Rock not Turnip Rock based on advice and they were right, good tip. Turnip Rock is something you need to plan for and make sure of the weather and your ability before trying. Good time out on the lake. Good women's clothes at their store.

The staff was helpful and made it easy to get in and out. Nice equipment and super laid back. They also sell cool t-shirts, sunscreen and other things you may need for the trip. They will also let you use their bathroom to change if need be. Check the weather before you go. It can get pretty rough quickly. The paddle is nice and the scenery is well worth it. Be prepared. It's not just around the corner:) Turnip Rock is really cool. Try going first thing so you have the place to yourself. Makes a much prettier picture and it's serene there. You can't climb above the beach. It's actually private property and anything above high water level is off limits. We took a lunch and headed to the beach next door to eat and relax. Only way to get to TR is by boat so it's definitely off the beaten path:)

We arrived in the Port Austin area on a Monday. Called in the afternoon and had no problem getting 3 kayaks delivered early the next morning for a three day rental and because we were renting for multiple days the delivery was waived. Left the kayaks by the front of the cottage later in the week for pick up. They called and confirmed we were ready and they stopped by and picked them up. Kayaks, paddles and life vests. This is my second rental from Port Austin Kayak and I will be using them again the next time we visit. Very professional and CC over the phone was a huge bonus to save a trip to town.
