After our visit to the River of history museum, we came here to see the houses of some of the people we had just read about. It is wonderful that Sault Ste. Marie has preserved these homes.

Great place to go for walk and read the newly installed plaques about the history of Sault Ste Marie, MI. You can view The St. Mary's River and see the freighters, fishing boats, sail boats, bush planes takeoff and land on any given day in the spring, summer and autumn. There is the International Bridge, The Soo Locks, Museum Ship Valley Camp, The Tower of History all within walking distance. Living here, I take the walk at least once a week.

Water Street offers a nice combination of informational plaques on the history of the town and historic building tours. We walked from the Corp of Engineers building to the Valley Camp, and toured the Johnston House and Kemp Industrial Museum. The Johnston House was very interesting, with helpful docents. The Kemp is a work in progress, but comes with the ticket!

Interesting right across from the Locks. We had lunch at a coffee shop right across from the locks. We walked around the historic district and visited the museum and the Catholic Church.

The Water St. historical homes include the John Johnston House, Bishop Baraga House, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft House, and the Kemp Industrial Building. During the summer months, these historical buildings are staffed with docents, who are dressed in period costumes. Musical entertainment is provided several afternoons each week at the John Johnston House by Susan Askwith & Dave Stanaway. These buildings are a work in progress, but still worth seeing.
