Nothing compares to this fabulous event held each fall in Mid Missouri.Our family has attended for years and we also enjoy volunteering at Deutsch Country Days at Luxenhaus Farm and meeting people who visit from surrounding states. After 50 years of attending these types of events--scouting, pioneer crafts, frontier skills, etc.--I am TOTALLY impressed that there is still more for me to learn and see. This venue is a great deal for the funds required. The family who owns this farm has brought vintage German buildings from the Missouri River Valley area and relocated them at the Luxenhaus farm. These are interesting and contain many German crafts, foods, and skills that would have been specific to the period and culture. In addition, this year they have finished what they call the Osage Trail, which showcases the Indian cultures (especially Osage tribe) and frontiersmen of the 1700+ time period. Well worth a wonderful October day. The parking was a snap, as the area Boy Scouts worked hard at keeping the flow of traffic orderly. There was a tractor-drawn tram to take you to the point of entry. Well organized. The terrain is not really conducive for navigating in a wheelchair or on canes or crutches, but I saw several people doing so without complaint. Brave souls. Oh, and the portable restrooms were the deluxe version, in case that is a concern for you. If you want flushers, though, you ought to stop at a station before you arrive. :)

This living history weekend is one of the best I have attended. There are so many craftsmen showing German skills from the past. You can take your time and watch the craftsmen at work. They answer questions and you can try your hand at some crafts.Great food is available also. There are many old cabins and out buildings to tour and see.The Osage Trail is also available to tour. You can take a tram up the hill and see people doing the skills of pre 1800 pioneers. There are trappers, gunsmiths, flute makers, etc.There is also a dutch oven cooking demo. and if you are lucky you may get to try a sample. There are primitive cabins and huts built on the Osage trail and many of the craftsmen spend the whole weekend camping in their homes. You can tour these cabins also. Don't miss this wonderful Living History Weekend!

I was looking at a flier for these Deutsch Country Days and noticed that "ACTIVE MILITARY" are given a discount for enterance to this activity. I am a retired military veteran and I also know a lot of disabled Veterans, and we have to pay full price because we have already served our country and have been injured or medically retired. I would like to attend this event, but since ex-military, disabled veterans and retired veterans, wheather medically retired or for putting their twenty, thirty or more years in, I will not attend due to the fact that we are not appreciated even though I have put my time in before a lot of the people that are on "ACTIVE DUTY' right now!!!

It was our first visit to Missouri in October of 2008, but it won't be the last. A long drive, but well worth it. I'm glad I brought my camera, because I was able to take a piece of history home with me to Maryland. Beautiful landscapes, trees---just a memorable and unforgettable experience. Weather-wise, it was such a lovely day. The artisans were true craftsmen. The event was extremely well run, the craftsmen and the volunteers were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Naturally,, the food was very delicious. The terrain is "hilly," and not totally handicap accessible, but if you're physically fit, it's well worth the walk, especially to the Osage Trail village. We thought we knew alot about German beginnings in this country, but we found out how little we know! Great time. Learned so much but not enough time. It was a real exciting and wonderful venture. We could very easily have attended on Sunday, so we did! Can't wait for the 'second time around' in October of 2009!

This is a festival that everyone in our family enjoys. From the gorgeous fall foliage to the covered bridge, there is beauty everywhere. Our children enjoy stepping back in time--washing clothes in a washtub, dipping candles, making rope--it's all there and much, much more. I enjoy shopping for crafts made by award-winning artisans, crafts that I can find only at Deutsch Country Days. My husband loves the food and will personally testify why Deutsch Country Days was voted one of the top food festivals in the United States!
