Very laid-back C'ville vibe here. Rotating exhibits and local artist studios. Love to visit every month or so to see who's doing what. Some artists give classes, have opportunities for visitors to 'do their own art'. The only negative in my view is that in the summer the top floor is very hot.....get a little cool air moving up there and it would be a perfect 5 star experience....

McGuffey Art Center in the heart of downtown Charlottesville is a visual treat for all ages. Three floors of open art studios with artists in residence, featured art adorns the walls, first Friday of the month open house, and classes open to the public. Schedule your visit around this jewel in the city.

Had the opportunity to visit this museum when my daughter and her high school classmates were showing some of their art. More than just a museum in that the artist studios are right there in the building. Got to visit with several of the artists. All types of paintings and sculpture. Very cool.

Drift by the workshops and talk to local artists about their work or get advice about your own. Open houses a lot which are crowded; can be very hot during the summer.

McGuffey is great - artist rent studio and gallery space in an old school. Artist often have their studios open for you to pop in, and there is lots of gallery space that is always open. Glass blowing on the ground floor is not to be missed! First fridays are especially hopping but it is a nice place to stop in during a downtown walk anytime.
