We brought our own lunch for the long drive and stopped here to eat what we had with us. There were a large number of picnic tables both on the grass and in the woods which made for a really nice setting for lunch. I think there are plenty of tables to go around, but on this day it was very quiet anyway! One thing I must say is that the toilets were absolutely horrible! I know you can't expect too much, but they were terrible.

Spacious and many picnic tables/seats available, with spots for grilling. A nice place to rest and eat, surrounded by nature. Could be crowded during busy seasons. Nearby food/giftshop (Elkwallow Wayside) offers reasonably-priced drinking water, and decent sandwiches/burgers. A good stop in the middle of a busy day of hiking and driving.

It has many seats, toilet, large parking.Several places for grill. One inconvenient thing is that if you want to buy a ready meal, you must first buy it on another exit from the road.

The Elkwallow Picnic area is a great place to stop if you're hiking along the Appalachian Trail or any of the other trails in the area, or if you're looking for a good place to picnic while driving the Skyline Drive. It's got quite a few open picnic areas, as well as a large covered area. It's also got pretty good restroom facilities, which can be handy while you hike.
