We visited on a saturday. I'm so glad it was open. Lovely place, full of history. A nice lady gave us an awesome tour and told us a lot about the history of the place. Very inspiring.

We went through here on a Saturday and had the lovely lady guide and the building all to ourselves. It is rich in history and the lady knew just about everything one could want to know. The staircase is one of only a few "floating staircases" in Texas. The downstairs is nicely restored and used for weddings, etc. The upstairs is more of a school house setting, although it was used by both sides in the Civil War. It is well worth an hour or two.

This place is packed full of amazing history! It exhibits more than historical artifacts but knowing this is where it all happened makes you feel the effects of what Texas History is all about.

Built in the 1850's, in a Greek Temple design, it is referred to as " the mother of education in Texas." Local residents underwrote the expenses in building it. In 1904 it was deeded to the Nacogdoches school district. In the 1960's it became the charge of the local woman's clubs. There are period furnishings and special affects from earlier days.It has also been a Masonic lodge, a Louisiana college, and a Confederate hospital during the Civil War.

It takes you back! I love visiting historic sites! The school bell wad built by the same people that made the liberty bell! Cool place to visit and Caroline was awesome! Be sure to donate!

The two ladies conducting this tour were very hospitable. We felt like we were visiting the home of a very dear friend. Very interesting information about the history of the building added much enjoyment to the last guided tour of our visit.

Docents greeted me warmly when I entered to ask about having a wedding/reception there. The women were eating and in a meeting, but they were so kind and gave me all info I needed. Place is beautifully restored.

It is evident that in 1859 when Nacogdoches University was built, east Texans cared very much about education and building for the future. The Old University Building also shows how much the women of a town can do to preserve history when they set their minds to it!
