I will tip this review from 3.5 stars to 4 stars because there is a surprising amount of antiques and information housed in a small space and because the volunteers really enhance the visit with folklore and stories. We didn't expect to spend as much time as we did looking and reading about the jail and the county's history. The upstairs jail cells, largely untouched for decades, were creepy and my two sons were fascinated by the stories of "ghost busters" spending time in the old jail to measure purported paranormal activity. There is a very small entrance fee. Be aware they are only open some days and usually only 1-4pm. Also, we were a bit confused on the "tour" aspect when researching this as a stop on our road trip: you can walk it entirely on your own, and the volunteers will answer any questions. It really isn't big enough to warrant a "tour", and even without one scheduled, we had a volunteer with us most of the time offering tidbits of interesting info. Bathrooms are located right nearby. We parked in another location on the square to have lunch then took the quick walk over to the museum.

Richard, the jail museum's former host was a hoot~ Sure do miss him. Plenty to look at here. Plan to take your time and carefully look through the stash of history kept locked up inside the jail museum. Everybody can afford to go here~

The history of this old jail is fascinating. The prefabricated cellblock built inside the existing cellblock was interesting. There are some typewriters on display that predate anything I have ever seen.

We were so impressed with the history in this town. The jail is like stepping back in time. You get to tour the whole jail. Nothing is off limits. We were the only ones in there. The guides were so informative. I would highly recommend it!

I'm not a history buff in any way shape or form. I leave that to my husband. What I will say is when we visited it on Sunday, I had a change of heart. The two tour guides made for a very pleasant experience. Their passion for history made me want to hear more. If you're in town, be sure to stop in for a visit. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Kept meaning to go in when we'd visit Granbury ... Glad we finally did! Tour guides were very informative. Exhibits were displayed well with lots of good information - learned a lot! Jail cells upstairs were very fascinating. Tour guides very welcoming, informative and happy to answer any questions. Don't miss it!!

We visited the jail and there was a volunteer tour guide who took us upstairs to see the jail and answered our questions. Small and crowded but worth the time.

So we came here on the advise of a local and was not disappounted. Does not take long to walk through but it sure does hold a lot of history. The volunteer who walked with us was very chatty and provided a ton of information.

We chose to visit due to several responses from Tripadvisor reviewers. There were no volunteer tour guides on the day we visited, which was a bit of a disappointment. The museum part outlines some of the county's history, but the highlight was going upstairs to see the jail. Really a neat experience and it does not take long to see.

It's hot and a little claustrophobic, and there are some steep stairs, but don't miss this if you're a history buff or if you just like quirky. I agree with reviewers who enjoyed this little gem. The lady who gave us the talk up front was entertaining and informative, and the museum in the back (where the jailer and his family lived) is interesting. The prisoners' graffiti, the size of the cells, the space for a gallows--it was all fascinating. And beware--Joe the Ghost might make you jump.

They people that work there know so much about the jail and are happy to share any information asked. The jail cells upstairs are so neat to look at, along with all the artifacts collected downstairs. Its only $2 so it is definitely worth looking at

Our tour guide was funny and pointed out the most interesting items in the museum. Worth the small fee to visit.

Well worth the $2 admission price. The staff members were very knowledgeable and would chat about exhibits if you wanted, or let you discover on your own, if you prefer. They pack quite a bit in this tiny building. The old cells are really eerie and I am so glad we dropped in. Very unique.

While you stroll around the Historic square in Granbury. You will want to add this attraction to your list. With many new stores, restaurants & the opening of the new opera house. Come enjoy your visit :)
