Wolves, river otters (occasionally), buffalo, coyotes, many species of birds, deer, elk...year-round wildlife viewing. Few trees so you get long views across the open valley along a long valley. I like it best in winter because it's beautifully snow covered and there always is some wildlife to view. It's another world.

The Lamar Valley is an interesting drive. We saw everything - buffalo, grizzlies, grizzly baby and mother, birds, wolves, you name it, we checked them off. It's not a zoo but wow, you don't have to loiter for too long for something fabulous to turn up beside the car. Love, Love Love this place.

My grandkids, husband and I stayed at the Roosevelt Lodge because it was closest to Lamar Valley we would hit it morning and evening. Sometimes your stuck in a herd of buffalo, and sometimes up on the slopes. Prong horn sheep, look like something off the african plane. Wolves and I got to say it was such a thrill, the naturalists with their high powered scopes and the nicest people ever. They were always so helpful and gracious and let us look through their scopes to see the best scenes, in our case it was a pack of wolves with a buffalo it sounds horrible but it was super thrilling for us city folks. My grandkids have 2 favorite trips, Alaska and Yellowstone :)

Thanks to our Natural Habitat guides with their excellent and efficient use of binoculars and spotting scopes, we saw two separate wolf packs, as well as lots of other wildlife.

We rode in a van through Lamar Valley as part of our Tauck winter wonderland tour. Beautiful scenery. We almost saw some wolves - the wolf spotters said there were some on a hillside, but even with spotting scopes, I couldn't see them that far away. However, as we got ready to leave, we heard them howl which was wonderful. Loved seeing the bison in the snow. Had a great stop at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch - we appreciated the heated restrooms!

It was beautiful and we saw Bighorn sheep, a red fox, several coyote, and a pack of wolves. The only thing we regretted was not having binoculars or a larger zoom lens on our camera, as they can be so far away

We took a Yellowstone guided tour and the guide was fantastic - we saw several wolf packs, heard them howl (unforgettable), saw a million bison blowing steam on frosty days, snow on their backs, elk, moose, eagles, fox, pronghorns...... You have to follow the Yellowstone instructions carefully and really buy all the stuff they talk about, but if you do, you can hike in snow and be warm and comfy, and really have an eyeful of this glorious place in winter. The wolves are extra-active in winter because it's when the elk bog down in snow and become vulnerable. Saw an elk kill, sad but nice to know the wolf pups are eating. Wolves prefer wild elk to any other food in the north end of the range. Apparently in the south, where elk are scarce, 3 packs have learned to hunt bison. Not the 2000 lb adult males - they're not insane - but still, wowser!Commence rant: If those morons in Montana can't be kept from shooting every wolf who wanders past the Welcome to Yellowstone sign - what do we have to do, use eminent domain to take the entire elk/wolf range? Don't these dingbats get that tourism is the only thing keeping their fleabite towns alive and if they kill the alpha wolves and the packs get chaotic and dissolve, we'll stop coming!! OMG. Lots of skiing, skating, just plain tramping to the Terraces - what a spectacular place.

Sometimes in life you lucky! And all I can say is, I got really lucky on my day at Lamar Valley. For as long as I can remember, I had an intense desire to see wolves in the wild. And my wish came true! Imagine seeing these magnificent creatures, long demonized by ranchers and hunters, and long extinct in the YNP area until their reintroduction in the 90's!I am still beyond ecstatic over this sighting! Yes folks, on the early morning hours of February 16th I saw 6 individuals of the Lamar Canyon Pack feasting themselves on a elk carcass. There they werey, in all their glory doing what wolves do: eating, mating, playing, resting, and then moving on. I could hardly believe my eyes, I laughed and cried, and laughed and cried...what an unforgettable sight!

In the winter the road to Cooke City is open, this allowed us to drive in the late afternoon to Cooke City to spend the night at a motel that cost way less than staying in the park. We saw lots of bison, elk, eagles (bald and golden), there was a winter kill bison that had two coyotes dining on its remains. We also saw mountain goats via another tourists spotting scope. There are some nice ski trails in the park near Cooke City (they may be skied in, if your lucky). Be careful in Cooke City (you may need 4 wheel drive, but could likely get by without it).

Try stopping at Nez Perez Ford. We got chased away from our picnic table by bison and spent 20 minutes in the car getting a close up and personal view as the herd slowly ambled by. They finally waded across the river and disappeared. You might have the same luck - and at worse it's a beautiful spot for a picnic. We also saw elk, pelicans, geese, swans, and ducks. Bison are around all day, but the other animals are easier to find at dawn or dusk.

stayed in the park in a cabin, so we could make use of every hour of the day to see this fabulous park. For me one of the wonders of the world. Felt so privileged to see the animals in their everyday lives. Saw Brown Bear the first day and was wowed. Then the next day we saw a Grizzley and he was superb. Digging for grubs. Of course the Buffalo are in abundance and wonderful. This is a must and worth every penny. Feel very privileged to have seen this first hand.

This and the Hayden Valley are the premier wildlife viewing areas. Between two different spots we were able to see badger, wolves, coyotes, bison and mountain goats. You can tell where the wildlife is located by the large number of cars in parking areas.
