I'm not much into toy trains, but the volunteers made me very much want to start. Sure, it cost about $12-$15 (can't remember exactly) for two adults to get into the museum and ride the train, but it was such silly fun, it was worth it. The volunteers who collect, build, and run the trains are so into it that it becomes contagious. My better half had to drag me out to keep me from buying my first set. The train ride was certainly more of a little kid thing, and we got looks for being the only ones without little ones on the train ride. But we couldn't NOT go. We were right there! And it was a fun, rather long ride through the whole park there right on the main street in Alamogordo.

When we walked into the Toy Train Depot, we walked into a little train store. There are some really cute train items you can buy. When you pay the $5.00 per person admission fee you can go into the train museum. The museum is divided up into rooms by scale. There is HO scale, N scale, etc. Each room is "conducted" by a different person and the displays are all accurate. There is also a larger train out front for the kids to ride on for a fee. It runs around the park. One of the rooms had a lot of historical information. Most of the museum is ran by volunteers. The only thing I really had to say against it, and I even hate saying it, but we really wanted to look at what was on display. My husband is really into model railroading and we LOVE to read, but there was one volunteer who wouldn't leave us alone long enough so that we could look and read. We finally just left. I know he was just trying to be helpful, and I think maybe he was just lonely, but sometimes a museum is meant for people to explore some things on their own. (Again, I really hate to say this.) I would have probably given this a four star if it wasn't for that.

My family traveled here during the Labor Day weekend and stopped by to visit this very quaint museum to take the train ride and visit the inside museum--one's never too old for a great train ride. Both activities cost us $6.00. The Cottonwood Festival was going on at the time so the train took us to the other side of the park where there were rides, exhibits, and fair food to taste. The best part of the tour was upon our arrival back at the depot when we were delightfully entertained by a long-time train enthusiast who helped point out both the factual and humorous details of the many different train systems they had set up. The depot houses a 1/4 mile long HO gauge, a smaller N gauge, and an even smaller Z gauge--all are up and working. All these train systems have the cutest corresponding accoutrements attached (e.g., buildings, animals, etc.). This is a wonderful experience for both the young and the eternally young-at-heart. Kudos to all the train enthusiasts and their willingness to share their hobby with the rest of us.

I thoroughly enjoyed the collection of trains at the Toy Train Depot. I can't imagine the time and effort put into their enormous and intricately detailed train sets. My kids had a great time looking at the trains and really liked the train ride. Speaking of kids though, my ten year old son was scolded twice by the people there for not being right next to us so make sure you keep your kids close if you go.

Men, women, children filled the park and were waiting with excitement to ride the train. The ride was short but enormous fun because of the great enthusiasm of the volunteers who run the ride. This attraction is located in a big park and is next to a public park with picnic benches all under giant old cottonwood trees. In addition to the train ride there is a spectacular indoor train table set up and once again a friendly staff to answer all questions. This is a fun attraction of interest for about 1.5 hours.

Perfect train ride for the little fans of Thomas. It also is a long ride, goes the length of the park and back not just a short circle. My 2 year old twin grandkids were estatic. Take the time and give your kids the thrill.

Limited operating hours are posted. Beware! My family and I made a special trip to this depot and were turned away on Saturday, 2/22/14. The cashier stated they stop tours at 3pm. The website says 4pm. So, either update your site or retrain your staff on customer service. We arrived at 3:30pm. If you're in desperate need of revenue, why are you turning it away? What a joke! This was a waste of time. To top it off, I had to listen to smart aleck remarks from two men who were surfing the internet in the next room. Treat your customers right. What's the matter with you? I will not return and will not recommend this place to family and friends.

Stopped in to pick something up for my kids but stayed for the tour. What a tour. Been to many of these places but this tour was the best. Lots of items and lots of history

It was a beautiful day, somewhat cloudy, took a drive to check out the train depot. My son loves trains. He had a great ride on the passenger train however the cooler fancier train he really wanted to ride on was out of service. Overall, he got his fix. The excitement really happened when an actual real live train was approaching the spot we were looping around, come to find out it was the president of the union pacific.

An old mans dream come true. Museum full on model trains and historic photographs. Volunteer run the place but the best part is riding the miniature trains thru the park

Cute little site to check out. The building is the original train depot that went through the town and is a mini museum of toy trains. They also have a train ride that is fun to experience.

Took my uncle here, he loved trains. His favorite part was riding the little train. This place has great stuff for collectors and is super fun for the kids.

What a fun place to take the family...the children loved the train ride and the engineer/driver made it very entertaining for them. He comes by and punches everyone's ticket and says something to each child. Do take a sweater...it can get cool. The museum is wonderful. Lots to see. You could spend a couple of hours there. It is great to have something like this owned and operating in their community. I loved my stay in Alamagordo.
