A center for conservation and education, the Sherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses 272 acres of deciduous forest, fields, a woodland flood plain, an education centered carriage house, as well as, an estate house with a tree-top observation deck. The estate house is also home to an extensive book store, exhibits and Audubon offices. Their are feeding stations around the estate house which draw 60 species of birds in the area and facilitate viewing. The migratory season for 25 species of warblers is particularly note worthy. Along with warblers other wildlife are also present like ruby-throated hummingbirds, wild turkey, great horned owls, red fox,long-tailed weasels, gray and red squirrels and white=tailed deer. There are clean maintained trails which are from .3 to 1.3 miles long some of which run along the headwaters of the Passaic river. The wildlife sanctuary is near The Raptor's Trust and the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge so you can easily make a day of it by visiting all three. On their website you can download a brochure and trail map and check out their school programs both on-site and off-site for students pre-K up to 10th grade.

Was a lovely place for your children to learn about our beautiful birds, and other forest creatures.

This large sanctuary has a visitor center, many well marked trails and lovely grounds with a river running through it. It was winter and we saw some birds especially a number of hawks. There are bird feeders near the Center where you observe many small birds. The sanctuary is off exit 30B of I-287 and sits back a few miles on Hardscrabble Road. There are good signs pointing the way.

A great place with many trails and a fantastic gift shop. Often hikes are led by a guide. Trees abound as well as birds and other critters.

The New Jersey Audobon Society’s Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary has 276 acres of natural habitat accessible by 4 main hiking trails. The “Dogwood Trail” which is 1.3 miles in length passes through the Sanctuary’s forest area. The “Field Loop Trail” is 0.7 miles in length and passes through fields and forest. The “River Trail” is 0.3 miles in length and goes along the Passaic River. The last is the “Habitat Health Interpretive Trail” which is a work in progress. The Hoffman Center for Conservation and Environmental Education is the vocal point of the Sanctuary. The Hoffman Center, which is new addition to the original Hoffman estate house, has an environmental learning center, exhibit rooms, and a tree-top observation deck to observe wildlife. The Center also has a wonderful store that offers a variety of nature books, gifts, and a good selection of high quality binoculars for bird watching. This is a very nice Sanctuary for observing Mother Nature up close.
