Took a walk at Dekorte Park after reading about it in a NJ Birding Blog. Nice place with good trails and boardwalks along/over the water. Interesting to take of picture of a duck in the water with the skyline of New York in background! I'm sure I'll find time to revisit this park anytime I'm in the area.

There is so much to do at the Meadowlands. Just stroll through the trails, see the mudflats. The observatory is open 2 nights a week. So many birds to see. In spring, the flowers, the butterfly garden are just amazing. A great place to escape to just sit and read, take photos or take a quiet stroll. The educational programs offered as well as cultural events are outstanding. There are also walks co-sponsored with the Audobon Society to view and learn about the many species of birds. Check the website for the scheduled events! Great for adults and children!

Peaceful, natural environment right in the middle of the meadowlands. Great for bird watching, hiking or just sitting and relaxing.

Hard to believe you're in sight of the various Meadowlands arenas, the skyline of NYC and in the midst of nature all at the same time. Yes, Sandy has done her damage, but they are working on restoring the trails so you can stroll along & watch the birds or simply contemplate nature. There is a great instructional site for kids to get hyped about nature in the main building.

Looks like it will be beautiful when they restore it. Closed due to hurricane sandy damage. We were going to take a side trip here while we waited for our scheduled time at medieval times.

This is a great free place to walk and observe nature and the city skyline. More specifically, firstly, there are lots of wonderful short hikes around their property (some of the last remaining acres of the original Hackensack Meadowlands that was filled in to build homes in New Jersey). Some of the hikes even enable you to walk over the water on recycled plastic floats and sit in blinds to watch birds and turtles and other water creatures. Every hike you go on will allow you to see birds, beavers, and many water creatures (like turtles). If you are interested in birds, bring your binoculars or just borrow one from the information desk, along with a bird guide or bird book. If you are not interested in birds, you can go on a nice walk and get great views of the New York City skyline. You can even walk out onto the observation deck building and observe many creatures and views from there. Secondly, they have a wonderful small museum about the animals in the area and another about garbage and what happens to it after it leaves your home (as well as very knowledgeable people to answer your questions). Thirdly, they have a lot of great educational walks and talks that you can sign up for (and your schools can sign up for to take kids). If you like taking walks and being outside, you can't go wrong. Its amazing to learn what type of nature lives in an area populated by over 15 million people! I have been going to this area for over 20 years and they are constantly updating and remodeling. It is definitely worth a trip (or several). In addition, they also have a lot of picnic tables, so if you work in the area, its nice to just go there and eat lunch.

The walk at the Meadowlands Wetlands is wonderful and FREE. Bring water and binoculars & your camera. A night view of the sky with an astronomer at the William D. McDowell Observatory is terrific. The sight says, "Learn about history...on a two-hour pontoon boat tour experiencing the Hackensack River and some of its tributaries. Or for the real nature lover, canoe your way through creeks that are home to more than 260 species of birds." Pontoon tour is wonderful, informative and beautiful See the wetlands, salt marshes, NYC skyline and NJ Turnpike all at the same time.
