The good. I thought it was a beautiful course, well maintained, very good condition. I love the undulating fairways and greens. Did not need the staff fir anything which is a good thing. They were nice, friendly and helpful. The bad. It is in the middle of nowhere. About 40 minutes from AC hotels.

Started off on wrong foot when they neglected to tell us 9 holes were closed when we booked. Course was in poor condition compared to others in area. Members we rude when group of three caught our group of 4. No water to drink on course and no beverage cart. Greens recently sanded(which they also did not mention) and had no problem charging us full rate. Will never return.

I played Sand Barrens twice in the past 2 weeks with my son and both times it was a bad experience. In both cases we left before completing 18 holes. In fact, the second time we played there it took 3 hours to complete 10 holes. We didn't see a ranger on the course either time which obviously contributed to the slow play. In one case we had a five-some playing in front of us and three of them were drunk and couldn't play a lick of golf. It was brutal and there was no-one to speak to about it. Also, the condition of the course was pretty poor. I will not be going back there again.

This review is really in two parts. The course itself is not great and in my opinion, overpriced. That said, the driving range is well maintained (hitting off grass!) and reasonably priced. There are cheaper options for a round nearby.

Decent course and great pace of play. Lots of sand to penalize errant shots. Local liquor rules prohibit beer purchase if your tee time was not made at least 3 days in advance.

Played this course in the afternoon in mid week for under $40.00. Pro shop and clubhouse were very appealing. We played the south and north course as this is a 27 hole layout. Tee boxes were level and free of weeds. The fairways were cut low and were hard and fast with absolutely no weeds. The rough was about 4".Fairway bunkers play as rough and there are plenty of them. Not much water to be concerned about. Greenside bunkers play as sand traps and were well maintained. The greens are very large and well maintained. There are enough trees to supply some shade when needed. One upgrade I would like to see is better marking from green to tee as the layout crosses over and you get lost easily and could end up on the wrong course or skipping holes. It was not crowded and we were able to find our way after getting off track. One of the greens is well over an acre and shares with another hole. This green even tricked our Garmin for distance. A number on the flag would of helped. Some of the hole require a little local knowledge for ball placement and a second round would see an improvement in scores. A bad shot is not a disaster. A good second shot and you can save your score. On our visit there was no beverage cart but there was drinking water on each nine. Over all a very nice course for the money and all employees made you feel welcome.

Played here last week and you can see the improvement. Greens, fairway and rough were in great shape. I heard last year was tough but so far it seems the course has made a great comeback.

The greens were in terrible shape for a $90 greens fee. The starter said that it was because of the weather, but another nearby course was in much better shape and the fee was similar. We will never golf at this course again. Even the grass that was cut down had a lot of crabgrass-- just total lack of care. It was very disappointing to use a vacation day at this course.

Nice golf course, that's not too difficult. Course is in serious need of improvement. Way too many spots are burned out. Everyone very friendly.

Course was in just OK shape for $105. Greens were very slow. very little water on the course and the temp was over 90. When I told them that they should have more water their response was that "people complained about that the day before also". not exactly the most customer friendly response I would have expected.

I played Sand Barrens on July 4th, the greens fee with cart was $105. The greeter in the pro shop was friendly and promptly assisted me. The started was great, gave us a good idea of what to expect from the course. Where the experience started going downhill was on the fourth hole. I make a mistake; I drove past the cart do not pass sign, I realized just a second too late and was 5 feet past the sign. I quickly stopped and went 90 degrees across to the cart path. This is when the grounds keeper began to yell at me “Don’t you see the sign? You gotta be kidding me!” I quickly apologized and he continued to berate me. I kept my cool and tried to continue the hole. At my next shot he stood in front of me with his arms crossed while I chunked my shot. This man clearly wanted to embarrass me in front of my friends. At the end of the day the course was not in good shape, it was not worth the $105 dollars. I cancelled all of my future tee times here. I am a paying customer and even though I made a mistake which I am sorry for, I do not deserve to be addressed as I was.

Sand Barrens has had a rough few summers with the extreme heat causing disease all over the course. However, I was there last weekend and they must have put a ton of money into the place because the course is in the best condition I've seen it in in three YEARS. It's totally worth the visit now, and I will be back many times this summer. The facility is beautiful, the food is great, and employees are wonderful. Everything is back to how it should be there.

I had heard that the last few summers had been pretty rough on area golf courses, and I was hesitant to come back after hearing some rumors about area courses. But what a pleasant surprise when my wife and I played Sand Barrens recently. The golf staff was as professional as I have seen in my golf travels (I belong to 2 private clubs) and I would recommend my clubs take a lesson in service from the Sand Barrens employees. From the bag drop staff to the Golf Pros in the pro shop, everyone was professional and made us feel welcome. The golf course was among the best I have played at the shore. Each hole is unique and I can remember each hole (and we played all 27 that day!) You could see where they have re-sodded some areas that were evidently hurt over the hot summer months, but the professionals were courteous enough to let us know before we went out. The greens were outstanding! Kudos the management, we'll be back!

I'll start with the positive...The layout is great. Unfortunately, the course condition is one of the worst I have played in the past two years. My local muni course is in better shape than this layout. A "heads up" on the condition of the course would have been nice when we made our tee times to alert us of the fact this place is a level above playing in your back yard. For other reviews to state this is one of the best public courses in New Jersey, I must have been to another course or in a time machine. Every aspect of this course was in poor shape. The tees had no grass. The greens had areas of disease. The bunkers had no definition, just spilling out to the rough. If it was a hole or two, I could understand but this was consistent with the entire course. While waiting to tee off on one of the remaining few holes, one of the staff stopped by to explain they have been battling disease. Only the North and South courses were open when we played. He indicated the 3rd nine was opening in a few weeks. Our group visits the area every year for our tournament with golfers traveling as far as Arizona and usually play the same courses (Harbor Pines) (Seaview) but their website makes this track out to be a masterpiece. Knowing what we know now, we would have saved the gas money and stayed north. What a disappointment. (At least the weather was great).

Overall: Sand Barrens is one of the best public courses in New Jersey. Course has taken a proverbial beating from the hot summer and several holes were definitely showing some damage. Positives: Course has a great layout with 27 holes; pro shop and starter were friendly and helpful. Starter warned us that the course had taken a beating because of the month-long heat wave and was apologetic. Plenty of ice water stations. Carts have GPS. Negatives: Wasn't thrilled about the cost given the conditions; for over $100 you should expect a bit better. Played the South/West nines; the South was in much worse shape than the West. They charge for range balls...I see their point but again-for over $100 free range balls would be nice (at least until the course comes back). Waste areas are extensive and have small rocks in them. Be warned; you'll also want to bring bug spray if playing in the summer.Overall: The "value" was the only area I would knock them down due to course conditions. It's still a great layout, and in several visits have always found the staff to get it in terms of being friendly and service-oriented.
