We had lived in the area for 20 years before stopping here. We just decided it was time and we are so glad we did. What a great, historical place. We were fascinated to learn all we never knew about the part Exeter NH played in the revolution!

This was a very interesting 90 minute guided tour for a very small fee of $6. The tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable. There was so much information about the American Revolution and the role of the state of New Hampshire. Guide was very open to answering questions. We learned a lot about American history that we did not know previous to our visit. I would definitely recommend this tour. There is parking available at the museum.

A great stop for adults and children alike. The tour guides are so knowledgeable… Exeter's historic treasures are a portal into the most engaging and fun history lesson ever.

I loved this place! They have outstanding historical pieces. They have an original broadside of the Declaration of Independence. The tour guides were very knowledgable and friendly. If I ever get back this way again I'll definitely visit!

Exeter New Hampshire has its share of history and this museum is a great place to start - learn about the role that Exeter played as New Hampshire's first capitol, and the Gilman family in politics, the Folsom family and their tavern. Unpretentious and interesting - a worthy stop while in town.

Make history come alive for your family, visit the museum and see where George Washington walked ! Take a stroll through down town Exeter and visit the Ladd- Gilman House, or Gilman park - take a picnic lunch.

Took my mom to see this museum, it was a nice short museum visit and we enjoyed the volunteers who explained the home and museum.

I was enjoying other attractions on Exeter's Water Street and Swazy Parkway last July. The museum was open to the public as part of the Revolutionary celebration and activities of the day. Since I am very interested in architectural design, mostly modern though, I liked comparing the (room arrangements on the different levels/floors, how the rooms were furnished, the wide wood floorings used, the fireplaces in each room, and the staircase and its railings) old house of that time period to today's houses of July, 2012. In my mind, I wondered if I could live at that time in that home without the modern conveniences I have today. I also wondered how elderly people climbed the very steep staircase going up to the second floor. I would recommend a visit to this museum. It was time well spent and reflected upon.

My parents were in town for a short stopover and they love love love history, especially the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. They've visited so many things in the area, it was nice to find something like this they hadn't known of or seen - thanks TripAdvisor for the local recommendations. The house and tavern were architecturally fascinating to me (I'm less of a history nut), and the woman who answered our random questions was so nice. It's amazing that less than a block from all the things most people see in Exeter - shops, boutiques, cafes - is this slice of the world we sometimes forget about.

I went to the American Independance Museum during annual festival in Exeter NH in July. Then is when they show a Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence and early drafts of the U.S. Constitution. It is a great time to visit as there are many activities going on during the festival,but if you can't make it at that time just visit the museum and have a wonderful time at early American History. Great take!

Interesting museum; small. Worth including in a visit to Exeter - we took a docent tour and learned a lot. Easy parking.

They actually have an original copy of the Constitution and host an amazing Revolutionary War festival each July.

They have some cool finds for a little museum, but Exeter was the capital during the American Revolution. Find some coupons as it is a little overpriced I think

Fantastic museum full of interesting artifacts. Good for kids 10 and up. There are many events during the year, check out thier website. Staff is excellent!

This is a "sleeper" museum with some interesting historical artifacts - such as drafts of the Declaration of Independence, one of the "certified" copies of the signed Declaration. It is also the seat of NH chapter of Society of the Cincinnati (membership is limited to the freedom fighters).A guided tour, given by one of the docents, makes it a rich experience (10,Noon and 2pm) and you get the chance to visit the Tavern where George Washington was "entertained" (had lunch!).
