A 1½-hour scenic cruise on the Winnipesaukee Belle is a pleasant and less-expensive alternative to the M/S Mount Washington. The two frequently pass each other on Lake Winnipesaukee, a glacial lake that the largest lake in the State of New Hampshire and the sixth largest lake in the United States. The Winnipesaukee Belle is a 65-foot replica of an early 1900's side paddle-wheeler. She was built in 1982. She quickly became an attraction in Wolfeboro, America’s First Resort. She is owned by the Wolfeboro Inn. She sails from the Wolfeboro Town Docks from mid-May to mid-October. In season, from July 1st to September 1st, there are daily cruises:Monday – Friday at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM Saturday at 10:30 AMSunday at 12:00 PM2014 prices are:$16.00 Adults$12.00 Senior’s (55+), Wolfeboro Inn Guests, & Military $8.00 Children under 12A minimum of 10 passengers is required to cruise. In July and August, there is a special Thirsty Thursday cruise which is a two hour DJ Dance Cruise from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. The cost is $15.00.Early in the season and after Labor Day, the schedule is limited. My friends and I have cruised on the Winnipesaukee Belle many times over the last 10 years. It was a hot, humid day for our cruise in late August so we went up on the upper deck which is open on the sides and covered with a canopy. The motion of the boat created a nice breeze that provided relief from the height of the heat of the day from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. We could feel the heat from the sun coming through the canopy. The scenic cruise goes by some of more than 250 islands. One is Rattlesnake Island in West Alton which is about 2 miles long and is the third largest non-bridged island on the lake. One will also pass lakefront homes of a famous actress, a former presidential candidate, and the home of a Microsoft Corporation executive, plus the 16+ acre vacation compound at Clay Point in Alton that went up for sale at $49 million early in 2014 by of a former owner of motor speedways. I won’t name names because I respect their privacy. The captain/cruise narrator does divulge their names. Refreshments are available. This a nice way to get out on Lake Winnipesaukee and to enjoy time with friends and/or family on a hot summer day.The Winnipesaukee Belle is available for charter for weddings and other private functions. I recommend this as one activity when visiting Wolfeboro. Now that the Winnipesaukee Belle is listed on TripAdvisor, I expect it to move right up the rankings on the list of attractions in Wolfeboro.
