Floating the Ottertail River is a fun and relaxing way to spend an afternoon! The river view is beautiful. There are several spots where you have to be careful to keep your backside out of the water because there are rocks just under the surface. There are some more exciting "rapids" but absolutely nothing too scary or dangerous, even for kids.My husband and I took our daughters to K & K Tubing to go tubing down the Ottertail River just out of Detroit Lakes MN. The weekday cost was only $5 and we had a blast. K & K, unlike the other place, offers a free second ride. Here's how it works: You drive in and park, go up to the (shady looking) building and pay. You then pick an inner tube (which thankfully are now mostly made of plastics rather than the old tractor tire tubes we grew up using) and they put it on a trailer behind a bus. Then, you get on the bus and the driver takes you to the start point and you unload your tube, and float down the river until you get back. It takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on how fast the current is moving. Oh, and did I mention that if you bring a cooler for drinks or snack (no glass or Styrofoam containers) you get a free tube for that? You give them a $5 deposit and if you bring back all the bottles/cans you had when you left you get a the deposit back in full. And, like I said, you can float it again for a second time for NO charge. The one negative thing I have to say is not about the business. Be warned that if you are bringing kids that *many* of the customers are there to party. In the past we've run in to young adults who were loud, drunk, and semi-obnoxious. However, this time there was a group of 60 years olds who were equally inappropriate. We warned our kids in advance and avoided getting into the river at the same time.Last but not least, they have plenty of string/rope to tie tubes together. We did this the first time down so we could be within arms reach of the kids. The second time we went in 2 groups and it was difficult/impossible to stay in close proximity. Oh, and you may find a leech or two. Between the five of us we had 2. Not a big deal. They don't hurt you...they're just ugly.
