sycamore shoals state park

I've gone here many times just to sit, eat my lunch (a great way to get away from work) and enjoy all the peace and quiet! My dad was very impressed with the museum when I took them there during their visit to our area - I had been telling him some of the history of Sycamore Shoals.

They have a beautifully done museum which accurately covers the History of this area. There are also beautiful hiking trails which are easy enough for anyone to enjoy. The trails follow the river offering amazing views with plenty of benches and even a swing so you can stop and take it all in. They also offer a picnic area and garden. Wonderful place!

We drive over from NC when our weather is too bad to walk. It is a very nice park with lots of historic things to see. We enjoy the mile path along the river and the small garden.

Other than the shoals and the historic replica of the fort onsite, there isn't a lot of scenery to please the eye, but, that said, it is a nice, clean, quiet place to take a stroll or a run. In other words, while there is nothing particularly spectacular to see, it is not at all an unpleasant place to spend an hour or so.

We love to go and walk the trails. Walking along and listening to the river. It's a great place to take the family. My son's like tof get in the water in the summer. It's really nice. And they have special events happening all year. Check it out.

outstanding museum in clean, comfortable surroundings. The fort itself is best understood after visiting the museum. Great placefor kids and history buffs

My wife and I have visited Sycamore Shoals several times. It is a step back to the !700 age of the then southeast America. There a fort and a new exhibit that is excellent. Park Rangers are great with informing visitors of the time and events. There are classes for the colonial times. Often there are events with Drum and Fife and re-enactments for such as Indian raids. Children will enjoy the visit.

It's FREE to begin with. They have a nice exhibit concerning the history of the area. A great "fort" living space so everyone can get a basic idea of how the people lived there many years ago. Also, a nice 2 mile hiking trail that runs next to the Watauga River. A good place for history and a pleasant walking experience if you just want some exercise.

The Sycamore Shoals State Park was very nice and pleasant during our Celtic Festival visit. The information center was filled with arts and trinkets and pamphlets an kind folks to answer questions. I enjoyed the event although is was small in my opinion. The bands were great, the cleanliness was remarkable and parking easy enough. I would like to see more Clans and maybe some local crafters as well.

Would like to have seen more Vendors and more clans participating. The bands were great! The special speakers and indoor and outdoor theaters were all fabulous.

What an awesome park in an awesome little town! Can't wait to visit during one of the festivals. We met a few of the storytellers and they knew all of the history of the park which was a great "free" experience!

It was not as big as I thought it would be based on the brochure but you learned some stuff there. Nice little museum and we did go out to the Fort. It was kinda muddy there though and didn't walk to all of the buildings but the one I looked in was interesting. There were a group of women doing basket weaving in another area and it was good to watch them and we looked at some pictures that were being shown.

Loved the trails. This place was so peaceful. We walked it one evening & absolutely loved it. There was even a place where we were able to sit & just breathe it all in. Very natural. River flowing close by. A place you want to go back to. Felt like you were out away from everything, yet it's located right in town.

This state park houses a replica of the original Fort Watauga positioned on the Watauga river and does various reenactments during the summer as well as an outside play. There is a small but excellent museum that tells the story of the fort and the settlement in simple straight forward terms. The history of the overmountain men that mustered here to march to Kings Mountain in North Carolina to eventually defeat Ferguson is fascinating and well told. This was a major defeat for the British in the American revolution that was instrumental in the change in momentum for the colonist. We were there the weekend there was a festival honoring the native americans from the area. There were crafts, demonstrations of skills, food and story telling. It was fun. There is a great trail that follows the river that is well maintained and short enough and level enough for all to enjoy. The museum and fort has no entrance fee except when there is a special event occurring. The Carter Mansion which a few miles away is also part of the park and worth the visit. It is the oldest frame home in Tennessee. The ample parking and clean restrooms make this well worth a stop.

My family and I often go for a walk in the park. It is close to the river and goes thru a small forest area. It's a safe place to spend a few hours. There are also picnic tables and park benches to stop and rest.
