Its sad that this resort is not still open. I drive up here ever time I'm in the area just to remember. A lot of the area is the same and we still walk the put put course. Beautiful area to spend a few hours walking around.

We hiked the La Cuchara forest near the old ski area that is no longer open to the public. It snowed heavily, but was beautiful. We blazed trails where the newly fallen snow had not yet been touched, experienced both packed and deep powder conditions. We communed with nature and got an excellent workout.

I visit Cuchara probably every September. Love to eat at Dog Bar and always shop in the small village. Thought about visiting this winter just to see what there is to do then. I recommend anyone driving The Highway of Legends to spend a day in Cuchara. Wouldn't mind retiring there.

We have been coming to Cuchara for the last 17 years and just purchased a vacation cabin because we love the area so much!!Going to Cuchara is like stepping back in time. Until about 5 years ago there was no cell service, now there is some albeit very spotty. Internet connections can be had downtown at the Dog Bar using their guest account or if you are staying at the Cuchara Inn. Many rental cabins have internet provided. But the real reason to go to Cuchara is to get away from it all. Pack your car, grab your groceries and head to the valley. Enjoy fishing, hiking, 4-wheel Jeep trails, golfing in La Veta, visiting with your neighbors, watching deer, turkeys, and the occasional bear. Slow down, play bingo, play cards, read a book, play a game of tennis or some putt-putt downtown. Enjoy ice cream or a game of horse shoes at the Dog Bar.The scenic beauty is the main attraction but the friendliness of the residents (both summer and permanent) are a true benefit!Lots of options for day trips from Taos to the Great Sand Dune National Park.Loving Cuchara for many years and looking forward to spending more time there now we have our own cabin!!

Our group was touring southern Colorado this fall. We were staying in Trinidad and rode to La Veta for the day. The scenery on Highway 12 was magnificant with the fall colors of the oak brush and aspens. We have some extra time so we stopped at the Cuchara resort. They have two restaurants there the "Dog bar" and the "Timbers" please read separate review on either of these. The "resort" has a small lane with shops that the facade of an old town. Beside the restaurants there is a counrty store, ice cream parlor, small breakfast place, a boutiques. This day there was a farming couple selling homemade preserves, jellies, arts and craft items. They were really nice. The Cuchara Inn has rooms and the real estate office handles cabin rentals. See separate review on the Cuchara Inn. I would recommend a stop in the shops to anyone traveling throught.

We just got back home from a wonderful 3 day visit in the Cuchara/La Veta area. Stayed at "Two Foxes Cabins" so cozy, clean and the owner Patty so friendly and helpful with the local favorites. We went hiking and what beautiful view all around us...the sound of the creek, the cool breeze and the scenery was gorgeous. Fishing at Blue Lake...we had a overcast and the fish were biting...my teenage grandson and grand-daughter had so much fun fishing and reeling them in. On our last day took my grandkids horseback riding at Yellowpine Livery...they went on a 2 hour trail ride and had a blast...Lastly visited Cuchara and visited the gift shops and lunch on the outdoor patio at "Dog Bar and Grill" Yummy sandwhiches....ate lunch while enjoying the beautiful view. It was a perfect getaway and my teenage grandkids had the best time :)

Take you dog and eat on the patio in the cool of the Sangre de Cristos mountains. Food is excellent as well as the prices.

This was my second trip to Cuchara with a friend who had worked here years ago when the ski resort was open and quite active. This trip was much like the last. The ski resort is not open and according to the locals the new owner and zip line attraction idea had not materialized. After two trips here I am convinced that some day some investor is going to come along and this is going to be given new life and come alive as a major ski and summer resort. The ski resort is there - but it is like a ghost town ski resort. But in the summer we found the small town main street alive and well. The Dog Bar and grill was, as usual, good. Try the pizza. Few places to eat so do not arrive late and hungry. It is a long way to anything else. There are rental accomodations to rent, nice and friendly local people, good cool air to breath, lots of good scenery but little to do otherwise. When they tell you there are bear in the area, believe it. We saw a large bear north of town dining on some vegetation. Our presence did not seem to deter him at all. Quite a sight to see.

We had read that the resort had been bought. There are signs up saying they hope to reopen mid summer 2011. We didn't see a lot of activity, one worker. They are supposed to be adding a zipline and some summer attractions. It is a lovely area, and would be fun to zipline when it is ready. There really wasn't anything to rate, but I had to give one to write a review.
