If you are not a fan of Height you may not like this. You have to be careful what time of year you go,think this may be closed in fall.

Wanted to do "The Pass" ride after seeing others struggle up and the Pros fly up during North America's premier professional bike race each year. Finally screwed up my courage to give it a go last summer on the eve (really, pre dawn early morning ride) of the last years Pro Challenge race. in md August.Left Snowmass super early and rode through Aspen to start the climb to the top. My nervousness was primarily due to some parts of the road being really narrow with a sheer drop off and not wanting to screw up road traffic by not going 30mph up. Needless to say, at 6 am by the time I hit "the narrows" that seemed to be 5 miles, but more like a mile in a couple of spots there was no traffic, so the ride was uneventful. By the time that I was above the old mining town of Independence, the sun was finally up and my body wasn't struggling to stay warm with the mid 30s temperatures. In fact by the time I hit the summit, it was 20 degrees warmer and felt like a hot day! Anyway, this ride or drive is one of those Epic ones that you will remember. I have done it many times in a car, but a slower, quiet solo ride where you can see things at less than a blur, the Aspen trees rustling, the sounds of the river, the wildlife, birds and of course incredible flowers and scenery gives one a wholly new perspective.Am looking forward to doing this again, maybe next time when its warmer later so that one of the indelible memories won't be my numb fingertips!

I have driven Independence Pass dozens of times over the years and NEVER tire of its majestic beauty~ We usually go in the fall in late Sept- early October and WOW~ The Aspens are usually in full change mode and just spectacular~ Don't miss out on leaving Aspen in this direction in summer or fall vs the humdrum Glenwood Springs way because you surely won't regret it.

If you have the time and weather permitting, take the drive over the pass and head to Denver via this route. Yes, the Aspen to the top of the pass is great while the remainder is "OK".

I spent a week in Colorado, visited Vail, Aspen, Estes Park, Denver, the most beautiful views you can get is driving this road, please do not miss it and drive safely, remember to respect the speed limit and buckle up... greetings from Mexico!

This is a must try for all die hard snowmobile fans. The road goes on for miles and takes you far out into the back country. Better than any cat skiing we have done. This is Aspen paradise.

We've made this drive several times in both directions and spring through late fall. The view from the pass is impressive but the best part of the drive is the approach coming from the east. If you are not used to driving roads on the sides of steep cliffs this drive might be slightly unnerving, but it will definitely be worthwhile.

Great drive in the summer. The climb up to Independence is fun from either side. From Aspen, you get the narrow sections where two cars won't fit side by side and you are hoping you don't meet a Suburban going the other direction. From the Leadvile side, you have a spectacular climb with great views (not for the height challenged). Amazing scenery the entire way.

Independence Pass is jaw dropping and beautiful experience. At the top of the Rockies, the views are beyond spectacular. The drive from IP into Aspen is equally beautiful. It is, however, closed for six months out of the year because of snow. In season it is well worth the trip.

Top of the world and the ride up and down was great. There is a nice walking trail to see the view from other angles.

Be patient on the way to and from the Pass and be prepared to pull over from time to time to take in some pretty scenery. Also, be prepared with warm clothing, gloves and scarves when you get to the top of the Pass - the wind can be brutal!

Independence Pass is both beautiful and exciting. For those who are faint of heart, some parts of the road are very windy and sharp, and there are not a whole lot of guardrails. I loved it! At the peak of the mountain, you can get out and walk up a trail. I tried but had to turn back. Just be aware that because the peak is so high, it is really cold! And if you are visiting from places in lower altitudes, take it easy! I did manage to get some decent pics here and there. My only regret is that I was traveling solo. Some of the really nice areas I saw were in places that I could not pull over to get pictures.
