The actual downtown area is quaint and inviting, but just outside even as near as you have to part buildings look run down and a bit seedy. The area needs refurbishing. Stop by Fleischmann's Meat for organic delicious meats and even pet food. There is a coffee/sandwhich shop down the street from here on the corner. It has good coffee and soup, but the service could be better. While the Historic District doesn't have too much crime other areas of Kingston do. In the end after visits to Historic Kingston, I'm left feeling like it is a town trying to be something it lost years ago. Don't bother with the rest of Kingston. It is depressing. Run down house that could be beautiful once more which some TLC, lots of power lines, crime, and all the chain stores and restaurants that are rapidly taking over American's character and spirit. I hope Historic Kingston can improve and make it, but it seems like the odds are against it.

Kingston is worth a visit from any true New Yorker as they should visit the original capital of New York state. It is a downtown with a huge potential for gentrification and to add all sorts of housing and shopping in their downtown. There are some excellent shops and unique stores to visit and the history with the church's and the state house is a must for any history buff. It is a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Kingston is a quaint little place with lots of really unique shops and restaurants. Fun to just walk around.

Nothing too earth shattering but a quaint downtown & it's nice to see that it's coming back. We had brunch there at a cool place - outdated.

It is worth a stroll of the downtown area with a map pointing out historic buildings. Some are open for touring, but they don't open very early. the Senate House is worth visiting to see where New York's first Senate met to write up the N.Y. constitution. Later parts of it were used when the US Constitution was written in 1777. Lots of benches to sit on and the shops look interesting.

A beautiful and thriving town. Larger than expected and very attractive. It's rare to find a small city in America with a pedestrian friendly central shopping district built within 18th and 19th century buildings. There are several very good restaurants and boutiques.

Nice choice of restaurants and museums, trolley or Rip Van Winkle ferry. Perfect to spend night have dinner and stroll along. Come early do the ferry or ride the trolley. Check out museum.

It's rare to find a small city in America with a pedestrian friendly central shopping district built within 18th and 19th century buildings. There are several very good restaurants and boutiques. This neighborhood has made a strong comeback after decades of malaise.

From my last visit to this most recent one, I can see that the area is attracting a different profile ofvisitor...those that are looking for that "neat little new place", whether it's a cafe, restaurant, or Indie type shop!

There are many interesting spots to stop at, both shops and eateries plus great historic architecture.

Last visited here around 30 years ago, since then the historic district has been nicely refurbished, especially enjoyed the Farmer's Market on the Saturday morning,

This area has gone the way of many "Down Town" shopping areas with the advent of the shopping maul. However like many of these areas there are many small businesses (as against chain) businesses that could only survive in locations like this due to the lower rent and free ytown parking...I frequently use several of places there and enjoy knowing the owners and receiving the personal service they offer and they generally know what they are selling and will advise you if they do not carry what you are looking for. The city of Kingston tried to revive the area some 25 years ago by re-fronting the buildings and have recently done a series of repairs...However this was only minor and cosmetic and the owners of the buildings do not seem to be inspired to fix their own properties up..

I have been an observer of Uptown since the 1980's. Nice to see that it seems to have turned the corner. LOTS of new eating and drinking choices. Colonial history where you might not expect it.

The place to be on Saturdays Spring, Summer and Fall. A great farmer's market and great people watching. I wish it was open every day, real farm to table.

We discovered that place by accident, while driving back home from a camping trip to Woodstock area. It was a pleasant surprise, this city gets your attention with its architecture and the vibe.
