This museum is in the building that houses the Fort Stanwix offices. WE went in and the curator gave us a tour through the museum that recounts the area's history from revolutionary to modern times. There are some really unique exhibits in here including a British drum that may have been used at the battle of Oriskany to an air traffic control consul that was used to track on the the planes involved in the 911 attacks. The displays showcase local industries and businesses that many non-area residents will be familiar with. This is an excellent place to start a day tour of the area at - it provides a history for the upper Mohawk Valley using interesting and unique displays.

The older folks and I were on a several day road trip down 'memory lane' coming to Rome where we had lived '69-'71 with the military. We were so confused about the change in the area. Pretty much nothing was the same as we remembered. The base, our home, the streets, nothing. Actually it was very sad to see. I had seen this museum listed in the things to do so suggested after our frustrating first night and morning to stop here for some answers. Answers we found. We learned about he towns changes, base closing, housing market...etc all from one of the docents. It was good to get some background on what has been happening in Rome since we left. Actually, the entire area around this building was neat, I don't remember any of it but the fort, and thought it was 'way far away' (kids point of view). The streets were a nightmare to navigate, even with the gps. once we left here we avoided downtown rome and did the northern routes everywhere we went.
