prospect cemetery

Prospect Cemetery was established in the 1660s and operated until the last burials took place in the late 1970s. It is a 4-acre piece of land now completely surrounded by the campus of York College, one of the units of the City University of New York. It is now managed by the Prospect Cemetery Association, and is only open sporadically. The association has undertaken a major refurbishment of the cemetery, clearing the overgrowth and planting new grass. Work is continuing in conjunction with architectural firms, assistance from Green-Wood personnel and volunteers to restore, conserve and reinstall many of the historic stones. Names famous to the borough may be found in its residents: Van Wyck, Baisley, Van Sicklen, Sutphin, etc. and its restored Chapel of the Sisters is sometimes used as a concert venue. Na entrada deste cemitério vi que ele é o primeiro de NY. Fica perto do metrô (linhas E, J e Z). Não é tão grande. Caminhando por suas ruas é possível ver as lápides e criptas tão comuns em filmes. Não é o passeio mais alto astral que existe mas é válido. :)

Voltando de Manhattan para Jamaica, vimos esse cemitério enorme e bem antigo. Me chamou a atenção a beleza das tumbas e a altura do mato. Achei bem conservado e me imaginei num filme de terror.

É um cemitério super antigo, estabelecido em 1660 (!). Imagino como seria visitar de noite, parece filme de terror. Tumbas antigas, mato alto bem horripilante, mas vale a pena, se você gosta desse tipo de atração. Destaque para a igreja bem conservada.
