I have had picnics in this cemetery! This is the second oldest garden cemetery in the US and a garden it is! The winding pathways up the steep hill with age old pines towering on the top, the water features with bridges and ducks, the amazing history that lies beneath one's feet..... literally!!There are tours throughout the season that are quite entertaining as you learn about Bangor's rich and remarkable!

I have visited this place several times with friends in the spring time. There are tables and chairs where you can sit down and bring along a picnic. This is a safe place to enjoy the afternoon. I always bring my dog and take her for a nice little walk.

Mount Hope Cemetery was modeled after Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts, which was America's first garden cemetery. It is beautiful and full of amazing history.

Mount Hope Cemetery is full of history of the deceased of Bangor. The grounds have hills, curves huge trees, a variety of grave markers of many different shapes many are family plots. My wife and I have taken enjoyable walks/hikes in th e cemetery. The best thing this year which surprised us was the BEST fall colors this year. We traveled the state leaf peeping. This location was spectacular this year. Mount Hope Cemetery is worth a visit.

My husband and I stopped here, while staying in Bangor, after reading the good reviews. It really was a beautiful cemetery, especially with the fall leaves. It was neat to see the old tombstones and to walk on the paths through the grounds.

As one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the USA, Mount Hope Cemetery is a place of beauty, serenity, and opportunity for personal thought and reflection. I try to visit whenever I come to Bangor, once or twice per year. Having grown up very near the cemetery, I am very familiar with the winding lanes, the hills offering wonderful views, the ponds and stream, and many of the beautifully carved monuments, as well as more humble markers. Some monument engravings convey quite touching sentiments. Family groupings can make one pause and reflect on relationships, family dynamics, and history in general. Mount Hope Garden Cemetery is probably the most beautiful place in Bangor and is certainly perfect for peaceful, calm, reflective walks.

We were looking walking trails in Bangor and we found Mount Hope. Who would have thought it a cemetery would be an amazing place to workout and enjoy the outdoors? There are a lot of hills, some stairs, and fantastic views. We walked here three times during our stay in the area and will absolutely do it again. I thought it might be creepy, but the layout of the cemetery is just beautiful. Each time we left, we commented about the great workout and the scenery. Great for walking or jogging.

Very well maintain ground, interesting and beautiful stones and a a lot of historical finds to do. A place where the past meets the present and for sure brings a lot of memories and leads us to reflect on the meaning of our lives.

This cemetery is one of the most beautifully set up and kept that I have ever seen. We stopped as here as part of a tour and learned that the locals are encouraged to use this beautiful place as a park. Indeed, they do. There were many people walking and sitting by the pond, simply enjoying the peacefulness of this place. Even if you don't love the idea of walking around a cemetery, take the time to visit this one. It has so much history and is really unique. A must-see if in Bangor!

One of the most beautiful cemeteries I have visited I a long time, maybe ever!!! Kept up well and there is much history here. They encourage the locals to walk through it as much as possible and often as they like...

Some may wonder "Why visit a cemetery when you don't know anyone buried there?". The reason? for Historical and thought provoking reasons, and for pure enjoyment of the lands. This Cemetery is under perpetual care, and is a beauty. There are many great cemetery locations. Some dedicated to military, some just specialized to a specific war. This cemetery is an eclectic mix of many types of graves and memorials. Many are the average people who lived in the area. Others are well known for their accomplishments and family. Make sure that before going, you print out a copy of the guided walk from their website. This will give you a little history, and things to look for. I would bring back friends and family here just for the nice walk.

We stopped and went for a walk through the grounds. It was a really nice day and we had a lovely time. Be sure to visit the website and print the map as well as the information about the monuments and other historic sites. Lots of history to learn about!

We walk here frequently and bring the grandchildren to see the turtles and frogs. It is well maintained and the walk always reveals something interesting!

This cemetery is the second oldest in the US so many parts are filled with grave markers from the 1800's. Beyond the age of the cemetery the other interesting aspect is the variety of sizes and shapes of markers - everything from common headstones to crypts, statues and spires.Of historical note - Susan B Anthony and Fredrick Douglas are buried here.Of movie note - several scenes from Pet Semetery were filmed here.

My wife and I visited this site after reading about it in the latest Moon travel guide for Maine. We were interested in the unique fort honoring Maine residents who fought in the Civil War, but we were overwhelmed by the gorgeous hills, stone steps and impressive above-ground monuments and mausoleums in the cemetery. We were awed by the majesty of this peaceful place, which affords the proper respect to those entombed there.
