I haven't done this one is some years. I remember it was extremely rocky in parts, and in those parts progress is very slow. But when you get high up it is very beautiful - you feel like you are hiking in the tundra. You'd have to be super energetic to get there and back on the same day.

Everyone always ask me what do you do in Maine. There is nothing to do. Well I say there is so much to do and it cost nothing. Just a little sweat. Enjoy the outdoors it is a wonderful place to spend time.

We started off mid day and planned to stay at the shelter where the trail meets the appalachin trail. We found the shelter no problem after about 1 and a half hours. After meeting some A trail hikers we settled in for the night on one of the tent platforms letting the other hikers have the shelter. Starting for Carlo Col in the morning, the trail is steep to start and doesn't stop till you reach the top, about 30 mins. The view is nice and has a clear view of Goose Eye. The trail then heads down a bit before leveling out. You'll pass through an apline bog, that during the rainy season could be a tough pass. Then there is a bit of rock climging involved before heading up a 10ft timber ladder that puts you minutes from the top. The A trail heads to the next peck off to the right (east) and the Goose Eye summit is off to the left. The 360 degree view on a clear day lets you see for miles, including the presidentials in NH and other surrounding peaks. Stay for lunch and take pictures! To head down follow the trail markers painted on the ground, on the west side of the summit. The trail startes down at a 45 degree angle and requires two hands. This continues for over a mile and then opens up into a beautiful hardwood forest that is covered in moose tracks. Keep an eye out for these massive animals and watch your step! The decline takes about 3 hours and winds back to a main road just up from the trail head is. This gives you a clear view of where you just came from. Overall it's a challenging hike with a rewarding view. Experienced hikers suggested. Loop takes about 6-7 hours total and is doable in a day with a light pack. Well worth a trip back!
