This is a little village representing the structures that the acadians built and lived in. They went to Sweden and studied their methods of building houses since they knew that the climate would be colder and wetter than where they lived. The swedish influence can be seen in some of buildings' construction. Houses are small but all available space was used. There is also a chuch, one-room schoolhouse, and a railroad station

Attended the Congress Mondial Acadien in northern Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, it was loaded with activities and family reunions. A beautiful time of year to visit this area of North America where European history began and the Acadians are establishing a pride in their homeland following their tragic displacement in 1755 from Nova Scotia. Anyone with an interest in French-American history will enjoy the Maine Acadian Culture, especially visit the Acadian Village and Tante Blanch Museum in Maine's St. John Valley.

The area boasts a number of historical sites. Several are the reconstructed Acadian Village in Van Buren, Musee Culturel du Mont-Carmel, a former Catholic church in Lille, and the Acadian Landing site in Madawaska.The region is home to numerous families that trace their roots to Acadia and Quebec. They speak a dialect of Old French peculiar to 17th and 18th century France that is interspersed with nautical words and expressions from their ancestral seafaring past. It is not uncommon to also use English words while conversing in their unique tongue.A popular local delicacy are ployes made of buckwheat flour, wheat flour, baking soda and water. These can range from crepe-like thinness to a griddle cake thickness. They are eaten with cretons (pork spread), maple syrup, jellies, etc. They can take the place of bread at any meal and are great with backed beans to chicken stew.There are numerous festivals and celebrations every year that should not be missed. The area will play host to the 2014 World Acadian Congress, along with Northwestern New Brunswick and the Temiscouta area of Quebec, Canada. Over 50,000 visitors are expected during three week in August of 2014 that will include over 100 family reunions.

Lovely to see the old ways preserved. Gives you a better appreciation of the hardships of settling in Northern Maine. Highly recommended.
