A walk up a hill but worth it! There is also a well-stocked museum next to the lighthouse. Any hotel with a meadow view room also is a lighthouse view. The inside of the lighthouse, however is not accessible....but check out that view from the hill!

It was great to go through the buildings and collections after many, many years and there is new stuff already added for the Quadricentennial celebration of 2014.

If you enjoy lighthouses, you'll enjoy visiting this spot. It is a nice stop after hiking parts of the island. There is often a lot of activity on the grounds, artists painting typical islands sights including their own perspectives on the lighthouse. It has a fog bell reminiscent of the Liberty Bell. Since it is a "short" lighthouse the views and pictures of the lighthouse are great up close and on the water. If you are taking the ferries be sure to snap a few shots as you enter or exit the vicinity of the island. There is no fee to step on the grounds of the lighthouse, but there are fees for features nearby.

Great little lighthouse on the highest point of Monhegan Island where you can tour the living quarters as it may have been when a family was tending the lighthouse. Lots of interesting old photographs of the lighthouse over the years as well.

A doable but fairly steep climb up the hill and you will find yourself with an unbelievably beautiful view. Have a seat on the bench, take a few pics and then head into the museum which houses some interesting and sometimes quirky history about the island. Find the news story about the hermit of Manana Island which sits just a short ride away from Monhegan. Worth the time to read it. The museum also holds many mundane period household items and furnishings, similar to those you've likely seen many times before. The whole experience - climb, appreciation of the view and the museum won't take you much more than an hour depending on how quickly you move through.

Looks over the harbor, the village, neighboring islands, the ocean and an old cemetery. Best overview of Monhegan Island.

well worth the walk up for the view of Monhegan, the bay, and other islands. Like other ME lighthouses, it is pretty functional but not attractive. Museum was closed when we went.

After the long hike and a cold beer, I decided I had a bit more energy to walk up -- 20 minutes uphill to see the lighthouse. It was a breathtaking view! Worth of my energy.

This is a GREAT place to watch the sunset. The museum is right there as well, although it will be closed by sunset. So make two trips up there.

The Monhegan Lighthouse may not offer the beauty and majestic feeling that Portland, Bass Harbor and the Cape Neddick Hubble, but its rustic place on the island makes it worth the trip.

had been told that this would be one of the best sunsets on the island so that was where we started. The lighthouse always looks lovely but even better in the soft light of evening.

This has one of the best vistas on the island. A great place for photography. The lighthouse is a short but steep walk up from the main road. Allow some time for the museum.

This is not one of the prettiest Maine lighthouses, but it is a glorious setting for watching the sunset- amazing!!

A working lighthouse at the top of a hill on the island of Monhegan.Monhegan is a fishing village of about 60 year round residents. The Lighthouse is 10 miles out in the Atlantic from the mainland. The tower is open for tours once a week during the summer.

Bucolic, incredible views, serenity, museum, just a neat place. Note the road/path you walk to get there can be a bit steep in places but it is wide and relatively smooth. A bench for seating is about half way up if you need to rest. Bring your camera!
