We were only able to travel a few miles along this trail, but it brought us to meadow and farms along a meandering route through woods, hills, and dales, and was a fun side trip from the main road. Highly recommend it.

Crescent Beach is a hidden gem on Block Island. It is located north of the Town Beach (which has a pavillion with facilities), and Scotch Beach (a popular beach for boaters in the New Harbor). Crescent Beach is East facing so you are looking at open ocean for miles. Access is limited so you either park at Scotch Beach and walk north, or Mansion Beach and walk south.

Walking trails abound within Block Island. You have to do some research to find out where they are, but serenity and the undisturbed sounds of nature await you.One thing that we noticed was the prevalence of stone walls. My husband became curious and got a book about stone walls in New England. Apparently most of the stone walls on Block Island were built by slaves in order to earn their freedom! There's an overabundance of deer on Block Island, so you need to be sure to take precautions against deer ticks when venturing into the woods.

BI is covered with "greenway" trails. There is no map, but you will see stone markers or wooden signs that say greenway. They crisscross the island bringing you to hidden gems...open fields, streams, stonewalls, sweeping views. One popular one is located across from the airport. Make sure you read about the glass globe hunt going on now on www.blockislandinfo.com. We never miss a chance to walk these well maintained trails!

A system of trails go thru the entire island. Different organizations manage them. They are all very nice. Something for everyone! Watch and screen for wood ticks. Stay in short grass area of trails, and does not seem to be a big problem. The longer grass and brush areas will be more problematic.

We thought the greenway trails were very well maintained. We spent an afternoon searching for one of the orbs, but we didn't find one. We did find a very nice meadow and some small wooden and rock bridges. These little gems and the myriad of birds and local vegetation made for an interesting and enjoyable walk.

The quiet roads of Block Island are interlaced with a network of hiking paths that lead you to parts of the island that are unreachable by car, bike or moped. You can bring a map, or just hop on randomly and see where you pop out. Last summer I took the greenways on either side of Old Mill Road and ended up having an extensive conversation with a rufous-sided towhee, and finding scrub trees with Spanish moss on them (now that's global warming).

The greenway trails weave their way throughout the island. The stone walls have little ladders set up to allow walkers to continue without damaging the historic walls. Lovely and quiet.

One of our favorite walks is the Clayhead Trail. Nice variety of landscapes to view, even a lovely beach. Birding is good so bring your binoculars.

Well worth a day of hiking. You'll be surprised by the beauty of this area. Most of the time it is quiet, so you will feel alone. Some places offer horse riding on the trails. Highly recommended that you bring lots of water and a snack, and don't forget the camera!

The walking trails are so well maintained and lead you to the most beautiful views. The entire Island was so peaceful and tranquil that one almost forgets all the day to day worries. This was my first time to Block Island and it most certainly won't be my last. I am not a "beach" person and I still had so much fun and met so many interesting people. The views were incredible whether you walk or ride a moped - another fun thing to do on the island!

We loved the paths and trails that just let you wonder on and on to take in the smells of rose hips and the sounds of the birds and rustling of grass.
