We stopped overnight on our way from Mammoth Caves to Lexington. It is definitely off the beaten track but for us well worth it. It was the end of the tourist season so it was not full of guests. This is a settlement inhabited by Shakers from the early 1800's to 1910. I think there are only 4 Shakers alive today. The ground have a number of buildings. that include the Inn, the Dining Room, a variety three craft shops, a gift shop, and more, a Nature Preserve for hiking/walking which we did not use. We did eat in the Dining Room in the evening and for breakfast. Both meals were delicious. The morning had a buffet or a continental breakfast. Everyone on site was pleasant, particularly the dining waitresses and the gift shop staff. We had a huge room, nicely furnished. I think there was only one other room occupied. It had a big bed, desk chairs, tables, dresser. Small but spotless bathroom. The only reason I give it a four is the internet service. It worked in the Dining building but not in our room. I hate NOT to have free internet service. They had a tour in the morning which we went on. It was interesting but only took in part of the Village. The rest was on your own and interesting. There were some volunteers weaving, etc. I recommend this place. During the tourist season they have a lot of activities going on.

I live within a mile of this place and it remains my favorite place to visit. Historical tours, great restaurant, frequent events, and over forty miles of foot, horse, and bike trails. It's Kentucky at its best.

I went with a friend for lunch on a cold, snowy day. We were seated by a large window and enjoyed watching cardinals in the snow. The food was outstanding. I had chicken croquettes and corn pudding. Splurged on bread pudding for dessert. It was out of this world!

We just spend a wonderful weekend at Shakertown. They offered a Valentine package that included reduced rates on a room and included breakfast and free admission to the village. The rooms are really nice and comfortable. The special dinner menu for Valentine's Day was great. The Shaker Village preserves a really nice part of Kentucky's history. Staying in the rooms that the Shakers lived in and touring the grounds that they walked is special. The guides are friendly and patient and willing to answer all questions. We attended a presentation of Shaker music and Shaker spirituality that was very informative. Number One, we hope to go back next year for a romantic getaway and Number Two I would highly recommend that you investigate and consider joining us.

We visited for two nights, and enjoyed the full day in between. Totally agree with the other reviews...if you enjoy the simple elegance and craftsmanship of days of yore, the Shakers offered the best. (Why not go ahead and create heaven on Earth...since no one knows what comes next?) Enjoyed a good night's sleep in a family suite that had a pair of twin beds in one room and a double in the other. There was a TV in there, too! And A.C.! So we were quite comfortable. Delicious and healthy food in the lovely restaurant, although service is not exactly speedy. But that's okay -- you're supposed to take things a little slower here. Enjoyed walking all over the place, exploring the buildings and talking with the docents dressed in typical Shaker clothing. Repeatedly blown away by the details of their many crafts, and their remarkable self-sufficiency. Our 11-year-olds will tell you they were bored, but there was plenty to engage all ages, including some hands-on stuff for kids.

If you enjoy magnificant old buildings and incredible scenery then Shaker Village is a must visit while in central Kentucky. The Shakers were master craftsmen as evidenced by the buildings they constructed. These buildings are very much like the structures you see in Europe. They will be standing and still impressive many generations from now.One thing many people miss while visiting Shaker Village are the miles of hiking / biking / horse riding trails. You will see some of the best panoramic views anywhere in Central Kentucky. You must make it down to the Fulling Mill site on Shawnee Run trail. Its a special place.

We have eaten several times at Shakertown but never knew they had so many walking trails. When we were there we even seen horse riders enjoying the riding trails. You could make a whole day hiking and then go eat at the restaurant.

We visited Pleasant Hill on a somewhat rainy and windy day with the intention of having dinner at the main house. We spent an hour or two walking around the grounds and took in the history around the sight, and enjoyed the many demonstrations that were available. This was a fascinating place and well worth the time it took to drive from Lexington. Such a valuable piece of history being preserved for future generations. Would highly recommend for a family visit.

On a gorgeous fall day we stopped by the Shaker Village of Pleasant HIll. The ongoing restoration of the many original buildings as well as demonstrations of various crafts and farm practices of the religious community known as Shakers was fascinating. We enjoyed the various talks given by the docents and even got up close and personal with the two yoked oxen who were introduced to the guests of the venue. We enjoyed the restuarant at the village as we sat on Shaker chairs. The food was delicious and most ingredients grown in the Shaker village gardens.

Don't miss the perfectly prepared, delicious, (and grown at Shaker Village) meals. The craft shops are overflowing with holiday gifts for friends and family. A unique get a way and a fabulous step into history. Put some simplicity back into your life.

We enjoyed a family day trip to Shaker Village. They make history interesting. We enjoyed interacting with the people doing demonstrations. We particularly enjoyed our time at the Meeting House. Tawana (spelling?) was absolutely delightful as she explained the worship of the Shakers and demonstrated through singing and dancing. She exemplified what a teacher does. And for our family getting to sing with her was meaningful.
