nevada city ghost town

Nevada City is located one mile from Virginia City. I stayed at the JUST AN EXPERIENCE B&B and it was a wonderful experience you must check it out. The town is very rustic and authentic, as i use to come here with my family when i was a child. If you are in the area it is a must to visit!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the hour or two that we spent at the Ghost Town. Would have enjoyed going into some of the restored homes /taverns rather than just looking in, but still felt like we got a good value for our money. Definitely worth exploring.

Enjoyed a few hours here, lots of antiques and shopping, the candy store was neat! They have tours on carriages, as well as an old fire truck that will teach you about the gold rush , outlaws etc.

All of the buildings in this town are on the National Register of historic places. You can check them out using the guide for both Nevada City and Virginia City.We did some gold panning here, but didn't have much time as we had lunch planned in Virginia City.I would surely come back the next time I am in the west to explore this piece of history a bit more.

We had a nice time walking thru out the city and seeing all the different people there. The gift shops were stocked with fun stuff. It was nice.

I went to Virginia City to look for old town or ghosts and found neither.I went to Viriginia City to look for ghosts. Instead I found a city trying, not quite successfully, to demonstrate that it is still alive. Let’s say that it is less commercial than Thumbstone, Az and less ghost town than Garnet, MT, or Animas Forks, CO, for example. Main Street does have original buildings, but they are all commercialized and most are closed after Labor Day. Three or four restaurants and bars remain open and provide the multitude of tourists with places to stay and talk about the old times. Be sure to check out the two-stories outhouse! Nevada City was much more interesting, it’s all the way it was once upon a time, no commerce of any type. The entire town is a museum, managed by the State of Montana and, once the season is over, only open on weekends. There are actors in period attire, hangings, parades, etc. For some reason, the site does not let me write a review of Virginia City, so I'll squeeze it here:Hi lights of what we found in Virginia city:- J. Spencer Watkins Memorial Museum History buffs, rejoice!I take a long stroll on Main St and run into this museum. Big signs claim it is FREE and I enter. It turns out to be very interesting experience. Museum it is not, in the traditional sense of the word. History it is, though: it is a hodge-podge of memorabilia, without order or organization of any type. Two floors of photos, historical documents, every day life items, taxidermy and more. If you are interested in history, you may find it very interesting. And yes, it is free, everything including the restrooms. You might also find tourist junk sold there, like a “bold man’s brush” (a flat piece of wood with handle) and some cards and books.- Madison County Courthouse: Not much history left in this on. It is, to this day, the Madison County Courthouse but nothing of the original furniture is left. Skip it- Historical museum: You get what you paid for, i.e. nothing- Recent archeological work on Jackson St (which once connected the main drag with the Alder Gulch gold deposit paint some interesting pictures of the minors life. Among the several new founds were a cufflink with an interior hook which might have served to conceal a playing card, some old medicine bottles inspiring thoughts of snake oil and remnants of an old boot, the likes of which were worn by bare-knuckle boxers of the times.-
