Walk to the overview to gaze in wide wonder at the second oldest river in the world as it winds its way through the forests of the Appalachians. After the view, be sure to visit the museum on the other side of the road to make your visit even more enjoyable.

Want to soar above the New River, seeing the tiny boats below? If so, stop by Hawks Nest State Park and wonder at,the views below. This scenic roadside stop gives you a flat grade to stretch your legs to peer over the edge of the palasaid cliffs to the river below. On the other side of the road are bathrooms, picnic areas and playground. Since the park is split by the road (I believe it's US 60), this park is a perfect "rest stop". Wild, wonderful West Virginia at it's best!

Stopped at the park and took the tram down to the bottom. Beautiful fall day in WVA so the tram ride and view was gorgeous. Can see the New River Gorge Bridge from on top off in the distance

The overlook is first class, the views from there are awesome. It's just a short walk from the highway, and well worth the stop. After spending some time there, we stopped by the gift shop at the lodge. The lady there was very friendly. From there we hiked down to another overlook behind the gift shop, where we watched a train cross the river below. and took several more pictures. We didn't hike any other trails this stop, but our overall impression of the park was very good!

This lodge looks really nice on line...if you want bugs in your room. Absolutely no customer service and old dirty rooms, don't be fooled by the website this place needs new staff and a serious remodel.

Grist mill was very interesting. They have a swimming hole from the 50s that is no longer in use but great for pictures.

We didn't have much time to spend exploring but what we did see we loved. My husband had to drag me away from the view. Next time we are in the area I plan on seeing more.

My hubby and I recently stayed two nights at Hawks Nest. I have eaten there several times since I have family that live in the area but I had never stayed overnight there. Our room was small and old (as many others have commented) but it was very clean, adequate, had updated furniture and a great view out the balcony overlooking the gorge. Besides we didn't spend much time in the room~we were too busy out hiking and seeing the sights. We were disappointed that the tram and jet boat don't run during the week in September but that will just give us an excuse to go back during the summer or the month of October. The "so called" breakfast that is included with the room left a lot to be desired. If you like carbs they have their share~oats, grits, white and wheat bread, doughnuts, coffee cake, juice, milk, coffee and hard boiled eggs. They had hot water but no tea bags or hot chocolate packs so I'm not quite sure what the hot water was for :) The front desk was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions and we had quite a few. As my husband said.....The view trumps everything else there and we loved it!

We loved the view and the boat ride was nice. We plan on staying here our next visit to W.V. For sure one of the nicer places in W.V.

Along with Hawks Nest State Park, we also visited Kanawha, Cathedral and Laurel Creek falls and yes The Mystery Hole. We also took the speedboat in the park and it's an easy water ride for those not into rafting or kayaking. The boat goes under the bridge and close to the dam, then back under the bridge and up the river to the Gorge Bridge, where you can get a great view from underneath. We also did a short hike in the park.

Spent 3 nights at the lodge at Hawks Nest State Park and thoroughly enjoyed it. The lodge is showing some wear, but was adequate for our needs and the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. Beautiful views and centrally located to New River Gorge and surrounding area. Took the tram down to the jet boat ride and it is worth doing. Captain Rick is a hoot! Hiked the trail down there and it is easy and scenic. Also hiked the Cliffside Trail on the upper level and it is very strenuous and has some tricky footing in several sections. Finding good food in this area proved to be challenging. The continental breakfast at the lodge isn't much, but the "super" breakfast for $5.99 is OK and will feed two. Overall, we really enjoyed visiting this area.

Nice little state park with some nice hiking trails. The Cliffside trail was our choice this day and we were not disappointed. I would not recommend it for children, even though it is listed as moderate. Much of the trail is single track and alongside steep dropoffs. It is Scenic and wooded with a lot of cool rocks and some water.

On an impulse, we went off the beaten path of 77/64 and stumbled upon this gem in the middle of the mountains. The kids enjoyed the winding roads up and down the mountains. Once out of the car, the short walk to an easily accessible overlook really showcases the beauty of WV. Its an easy, free, way to enjoy the mountains and rivers WV has to offer.
